I-Pod's - Where Do The Songs Come From ?
 

I don't know much but have heard a lot about them, but could someone please give me a beginner's guide to them please ?

If I went out and bought one, where would I get songs from ?

Assuming this is not a wind up the basic idea is that you copy your CDs onto your PC, put the iPod software onto your PC and then copy the music to your iPod and live happily ever after. Other music sources include the internet of course. My kids are getting fed up with ipods breaking down and would have probably rather got some other type of player.

Please back your music up onto a reliable drive every now and again just in case!

If anyone tells you to use Windows Media Player to rip them into MP3. Give them a slap. I tried that and it wouldnt work. Could only do them to WMA (which is still fine for iPods) but thats not the point :(

all the help you need. Copy existing CD's to your PC or purchase online - do both of these with itunes software (free)

media player 10 actually supports MP3 not just WMA, Tools > Options > ripmusic

If you go for a true Ipod (as oppose to others) then you can use iTunes (free but a big download) to rip to AAC - that appears to be the best format for iPods - You can also buy music from the iTunes store

I can use WMP10 to rip to mp3 fine, very odd.

Seriously this isn't a wind up - I've heard so much about them but don't actually know how they work :rolleyes:

Me too, I`m not right up with technology. I dont know much about computers either, how difficult is to download and copy from computer to mp3 thingy, whats involved?

Can anyone recogmend an MP3 player? Theres so many to choose from.

The best answer to your first para is to suggest that you get a mate in who is up to speed and get him to show you. Provided the computer is compatible (if it's fairly new it will be) then it really is quite straightforward once you have done it under guidance a couple of times. Don't know about MP3 players but would be interested to hear suggestions from others.

Im pretty new to the mp3 thing too. But I have spent a lot of time going through all the info about the different players.

The one I am about to buy is the Toshiba Gigabeat 40gig. With this you get a nice colour screen, in line remote and as the name suggests 40gig. I dont think i will ever fill this but the inline remote was a good selling point for me.

Looked at the ipod nano. Looks very trendy (this however means nothing to me!) I like my gadgets to be functional not interested if it looks 'bling'. Having said that though the gigabeat looks pretty good too although it is much larger than the nano but for me thats also a good thing as im sure i would loose the nano too easily. Th nano is only 4gig which isnt much when accounting for purchase price. The ipod though as you can imagine has lots of other bits and bobs that you can buy for it. Again not a selling point for me.

My other choice was the Sony HD5. But despite the good reviews the lack of colour screen put me off. Apparently it has good sound quality and fantastic battery life.

Check out the reviews on amazon. They may help you decide.

Also new to all this fangled technology, bought myself an ipod 20gb and found out my compoota wouldn't work it :mad: . Bought a new poota from dell (not the mate down the pub) for decent money and haven't looked back.

Burn all the cd's you've got into itunes (comes with the ipod) and they then go onto the ipod via a USB cable. Very easy even if you are PC stupid.
Sound quality is ace, easy to use, colour screen.

Buy an iPod, install iTunes - comes with it - put your CD in your CD drive and close the drawer. That's it. No faffing around as with other MP3 players.

As others have said, take your existing CD's and "rip" the CD's to the hard drive. Typically you would use iTunes for this, but any app that will encode them into MP3 or AAC format will do fine, and I also think WAV will be ok.

Personally I'd use iTunes if you're using an iPod.

As for obtaining other music, well, there are many sites that allow legal downloads of music, one of them being the iTunes Music Store (iTMS). There's a great selection of music on there and pretty well priced to boot (much to the chargrin of the Music companies who, as always, want more money from us punters, gluttons that they are).

Some people dislike having to use iTunes, as they prefer to drag and drop music files onto their player, quite why I'm not sure, but hey, their choice.

To check if your machine meet's the specs then check out Apple's website (have a peek here). Basically you need the machine to have at least USB 1.1. support, and I think if your machine has built in USB then it should be able to do that, ideally USB 2.0 would be better, but that might only be on newer machines or if you have a USB PCI card in your machine.

Looks like you'd need at least Windows 2000 SP4 to run things properly. If you're on Windows XP then that's fine as well. If you're using windows 95/98/ME then it looks like it won't work, in which case, upgrade to XP.

Robbie, What exactly was your problem with the iPod? Did you have USB? Were you running Windows 2000 or later?

iTunes runs just fine on my 7 year old machine. Bit slow to start but once up and running no problems.
