4.4 kilo flywheel too light for every day use?
im about to replace my clutch as its slipping/juddering under heavy load 4th/5th gear. ive bought a (exedy) borg and beck kit. i just wanted to ask the above. its going in a 93 import.
all opinions welcome stew |
Its not too light unless you want to do drag starts in which case it makes getting it right a very precise skill.
You need your tick over settings up to scratch. For the first couple of days, expect to stall a few times when setting off due to not using enough revs to counter the lack of inertia. You adjust to what is required. Personally, I think the gains from lightened flywheels are very over rated and if the 4.4 kg item is costing a load of dosh I am sure the money could be better spent elsewhere. I have an O/E lightened around 7 kg for sale at £120 delivered. |
I have a 4.2kg wheel and it is fine. Idle quality wasn't affected both on the original ECU and the Apexi PFC. As said, getting used to setting off takes a few days but you soon get used to it and then drag starts won't be a problem. I found the car pulled much more strongly in 1-4th gears and it seemed as if the boost came back in quicker after a gear change.

so what will my 93 import wrx flywheel weigh? and can i see some pix of that fly please harvey?

about 12kg from memory.

Most people experience very little or no difference with a lightened OE fly (7-8kgs).
I run an ultra-light fly (ACT 4.2/.4kg) on mine and find it works well. Some people may experience some problems launching well, but I cant say I've had a problem with mine and I drag mine a fair bit. Worthwhile mod imo. Bob |
fair play bob. i do about 4 drag events per year (the misses runs her car too so i dont run as often as id like. still) but its mainly fast road. i just thought as my clutch is soon to be changed and it can often take out the fly when it goes i may as well uprate it.

Don't forget to substantially lighten the pulley at the other end of the crank if you go that light !! You'll unbalance the dynamics if you take all the weight off one end only.
In my opinion 4.2 is too light but I suspect that l'll get shouted down - call me old fashioned but 7 ish kilos seems a good balance. Good luck all . David , APi Engines / APi Impreza www.apiengines.com |
mine is a lightened oe unit from Harvey, about 8kgs from memory, sweet

im also thinking of buying a set of (3) pulleys also. is this what you mean by balancing the other end?

That is what David means. There was quite a thread about a year ago about this subject, and the general consensous was 8Kg is a good compromise.
Bob'5: You must have a special launching sense to drag on such a light wheel! You on slicks or road tyres now? API do a clutch/wheel package iirc @ 8 KG, and I THINK this eases the need for a lightened pully . I'm sure David will correct me if I'm wrong! Graham. |

I find consistant launching no problem with the light fly :D Bob PS. Still on OE pulleys. |

stew You'll find a ultra-light fly makes a nice difference on the road too. Bob |

just to re-cap.
borg&beck clutch fitted. lightend (7kilo cheers harvey smith) flywheel fitted along with lightend crank pulley. the job took 4 hours. clutch is very light and sharp. has lots of bite :). the car pulls a little better than before on boost. also id like to add that its a bloody good job i bought a lightned flywheel as my old one (standard part&clutch) was cracked all over the friction area:eek: |
