XP File transfer Wizard
I understand XP has a marvellous files & settings transfer wizard......
Scenario : Can I have my old PC sat next to the NEW 'fresh installed' pc and transfer ALL my settings via a Network or Crossover cable ?? Has anyone had any success in this area ?? Alternatives to the above gladly considered Reason = Want to upgrade, but without the hassle of having to remeber what to reinstall............. :D Cheers Phil |
Yes, no and sort of :)
The transfer wizard cannot transfer programs, only data. Its a bit thick, and will only transfer data from commonly used locations unless you tell it otherwise I would install all the programs you want on your new machine. Then use the wizard to transfer the data. Then, as it was written by Microsoft, I would place no faith in what it has done until I have actually seen it work before my eyes ;) Alternatives are to transfer the data by hand. Use the export facility of each program to export what settings you can, then transfer the rest through explorer. If you have the hardware and knowledge I always recommend that you taken an "image" of your old machine before disposal. That way, if you miss something you can then mount the image to access the data. To do this you could use an external hard drive and something like Acronis Ture Image |
