Happy Trafalgar Day!
 

On this day, 200 years ago, Admiral, The Lord Nelson and Admiral Collingwood led two divisions of the Royal Navy into battle against the combined fleets of Spain and France off Cape Trafalgar. After much close fighting at the close of battle 17 enemy ships where taken as prizes. 6 further ships where either sunk or burned. But Lord Nelson lay dead, shot by a marine from the Redoubtable during the most heated moments of the battle. England had lost a hero, but the victory had dashed Bony's hopes of invasion.

My local publican is ex-navy and he is having a Trafalgar night at my local tonight! :D

I have a 5'x4' battle of Trafalgar print hanging in my house... it goes down a treat with by brother's French fiancee! :D

Did you see the recent re-enactment they did? In order to be PC they used 'Reds' vs. 'Blues' so as not to upset the frogs! :mad:

I missed the re-enactment. Would like to have seen some of those old ships.


I have a large poster print of the Victory at full sail. I've had it for about 10 years but sadly my wife refuses to let me put it up in the house.

Bloody foreign bint, obviously. Tell her she should accept it as part of OUR country or she should fook off back to where she came from.

One of our local towns, renowned for its population who favour the alternative life style, has dictated that the Battle of Trafalgar may not be celebrated within its boundaries in case it upsets the French!

We have a "England Expects" fish and ship supper tomorrow at the village hall. Looking forward to it, but had hoped to higher out a period naval uniform for the night. Wife vetoed that as well. :(

Why do we always celebrate war heroes?

Personally i'd rather celebrate someone creative or someone like Henry VIII who was famous for eating,drinking and putting up with six wives.Hell he deserves a statue for that,if nothing else.

Good thread. Will be celebrating a great Norfolk hero tonight with Admirals Reserve and Nelsons Revenge. Great beer for a great man.

Local pub here is having a Nelson night with food and drink. Should be a right laugh with all that rum flying about. :)

There were a few jocks involved in the english fleet as well,we go to some lenghts for a fight eh.

Suprised you have had to ask that Paul so i will spell it out for you ;).
Nelson, Mongomery, Wellington, Churchill and many others are the reason we are here today as we are (even if we are not perfect) and not part of another nation keen to invade and/or take us over. It is a mark of respect foer those who fell in battle on both sides and reminds us of what can happen if things go wrong and nations take up arms against each other.

War is nasty cruel and evil but sometimes you have to stand up for what is right and you and yours.

As for celebrating Henry VIII or someone creative then good idea and why not!

Im amazed its still allowed to recognise something like this - Im surprised its not deemed un-PC because some minority groups claim Nelson had links to the slave trade or something!

When the battle was re-entacted a few months ago they had 'Blues' (us) and 'Reds' (cheese-eating surrender-monkeys) so as not to offend anyone. Ironically the Spanish who were also beaten dont really care and theyre commemerating the battle today; unlike the French who barely mention it.

Well, had a great time last night at the village hall. There was Victory name board over the door way and the whole room was made out like the main gun deck of a British Man o' War. Pictures of cannon along the walls, sail cloth on the ceiling, false desk supports with hawsers and ropes, the famous signal grating you as you entered, tables laid out like mess tables along the walls, Union and RN flags everywhere. :)

Really glad everyone made an effort and joined in the celebration. To top it all I won on the raffle and picked a three bottle Trafalgar commemorative beer set (Villeneuve's Tears, Lady Hamilton's Sorrow and Nelsons Blood Beer) from a Norfolk brewery. I'll look forward to sampling these once my hangover has worn off....

How did everyone else celibrate the day?

Well I think it's a disgrace that flys in the face of everything we strive for in 'New' Britain.

UB, I really can not see what your problem is. There is nothing wrong in celibrating this event as it is part of Britans heritage. I'm sure the Muslims have no real view on this either way. And to be honest I could not care less if they were offended or not!

I think that that local town I mentioned refused to allow any celebrations not only because it might offend the French but really because they do not want to risk losing the councillors' freebie trips to their twin town!

Well our Trafalgar night down the local was most enjoyable! The landlord hired the local carrot crunchers known as the 'Pill Whalers' to sing some sea shanties and folk songs, there was a prize for best Nelson and Emma Hamilton, a rather nice Trafalgar ale on tap and charity buffet in aid of the Portishead Inshore Lifeboat.

My brother and I lost miserably at bar billiards to some wiley old locals who we thought were more drunk than us..... they thrashed us by 3,000 pts! :(

It was terribly British and just a little bit naff admittedly, but it was a big :hjtwofing to the French! :D
