Hi guys and girls.

Ive noticed on my my95 a sort of burning smell coming from the turbo area. I can smell it inside the car whilst driving and also after ive stopped. It seems to happen only when ive driven hard even if its for a short period of time. I have had a brief look and can see nothing wrong that stands out. Is this normal or is there a problem?

Thanks in advance
mark

Hi, I had the same thing in my MY95, two weeks ago.
in my case it was the Valve cover gasket (don't know how its called in english),
nothing to it was fixed in 3 hours.
also check if you have too much oil, maybe it's getting rid of some.
It's probably not the Turbo, or you would have felt it, whats more this Turbo is very durable.
Cheers Udi.

mmm... possible i suppose. Thinking about it, it does smell like an oil burning smell

Hi
I've just had a similar problem on my 95 car.
As well as the smell I could see smoke coming up from under the turbo somwhere.
On investigation it looked like the gasket mentioned in the above post had gone on mine and was dripping small amount of oil on the manifold below it and this was burning off when the car was driven hard.
The car was in for a service yesterday and the dealer had a look at this problem and has assured me there is no oil leak on the car.He puts it down to grease from other places melting when the engine is hot and dripping down the cam cover and onto the manifold. To stop the smoking and remove the grease the engine was steam cleaned. Everywhere is now clean and oil free so I'm going to moniter the situation to see if it happens again.

CHEERS CHRIS, PLEASE LET ME KNOW THE RESULTS AS THIS MAY BE THE CASE WITH MINE AS MY ENGINE IS A BIT GREASY/DIRTY

I was advised against steam cleaning the engine. It has a protective anti corrosion grease, slime, goo substance splashed onto it. If you clean it off the alloy corrodes and goes furry - nice, it will match your fluffy dice http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

Are you sure it's not just the clutch ? mine stinks if I've driven it hard.

Uh I hope it's not just me that gets clutch slip.

Sith

Is that the green waxy $hit I've noticed on my engine?

No, I do think it is something being burnt off ie: oil around the turbo area as i have noticed a little smoke/vapour coming out of the intake before when the smell was about. And, touchwood, I certainly dont get clutch slip, christ how much is a new clutch??eek
