Eighties music - not as good as people remember it

Everyone tells you that you had to be there, man, but the fact is that although I was born in the Sixties, I have absolutely no recollection of any of the iconic events – The Beatles, JFK, Apollo etc. I used to hate everyone who grew up in that era telling me that my music was terrible, and that The Beach Boys was where it was at. Man.

No way could I understand their liking for Herman and the Hermits, but assumed that it was a generational thing, that I’d be the same when my time came.

But I was there for the Eighties. And despite the vast number of “I Heart the 80s” compilations, nothing will convince me that dancing to Living In A Box was anything other than laughable or that Dancing In The Streets could have been taken seriously. Was I living in a parallel universe or something? Even with the most liberal application of rose-tinted glasses, Renee and Renato were sh1te of the first order, Duran Duran were *never* hip, and most of Factory’s output was either unutterably unlistenable or stonily po-faced. Even now, I can’t listen to the dreadful tedium that is Madonna’s Holiday without thinking of DJ Sven and Miker G’s attempt to further ruin it, hard though that may have been.

The Eighties were great, for me at least. But it gets on my t1ts that the music is held out as being the best thing since self-cleaning undies.

The Cure, U2, The Smiths, REM to name but a few of the best bands ever all hailing from the 80's.

agree moose, however, look at some of the rock bands: queen, floyd, to name 2, and then you'll find some musical talent, songwriting, and hardcore tennis racket on the bed air guitar pleasure...

- or is it just me???

- i'll get me snorkel.

But that's exactly the point - people who grew up in the 60s were saying that about 70s and 80s music ..... I'm just being honest and saying that probably 90% of 80s music was every bit as bad as today's stuff. I mean, is there any defence for Limahl, Tina Turner, Scritti Politti, or Survivor?

Brendan Hughes 20 October 2005 03:35 PM

Holy moly. There is NO defence for Limahl, end of.

rossyboy 20 October 2005 03:37 PM

Spandau Ballet all the way.....

Then there was Bros, Kylie and Jason, Mel and Kim, 5 star.

The eighties were just class man ;)

The eighties had it fair share of good and bad music and acts in fact more than its fair share of bad.

However there is plenty of good stuff;
U2, Joy Division, Simple Minds,Smiths, Soft Cell, ABC, Tears for Fears, OMD, The Stranglers, Human League, Talk-Talk, Talking Heads, Frankie GTH, Yello, The Clash, The Undertones, The Jam, Paul Weller, Blondie, The Specials, George Clinton(spans so many eras), Cameo, Soul 2 Soul and many, many more.

Plenty of good stuff imho.
:)

Oh and as for comp albums try Teenage Kicks and The Real Eighties for some of the better stuff - and a few duff tunes too. :)

In terms of metal , the 80's was the rise of thrash - Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth et al. So a VERY good period for music IMO.

Unfortunately us metallers also had to contend with the likes of Poison, Bon Jovi etc (but at least they had fit women in their videos ;) :D )

The best thing about 80's music is the nostalgia / memories it brings. The 80's were my years - just left school; discovered pubs and the whole world at my feet - best experiences of my life!

If I could go back......I'd go without hesitation.
