User Profiles
 

ok this may seem fairly basic but can you set up a new user profile on a computer without having to ask for their password? Its not as straight forward as copying all those default folders is it?

to set up email profiles and stuff then you really need to log is as them (99% of the time), is this a domain PC or just another local account. Things like desktop shortcuts can be put into the all users folder in documents and settings, but profile settings like what mail server they are pointing too will be needed to be set up as the user 99% of the time:)

yeah domain pcs. i thought you could do things without having to ask for them. Do all you admins ask for users passwords? or is it all or nothing; i know some places completely lockdown desktops, i guess then you dont need them?

transferring users from old to new pcs. All the software etc is pre done, just need to move over user docs - My documents,desktop, favorites etc. At the moment i need to log in as them for their profile folder to be created then copy the docs over. Want to be able to do this without asking for passwords

the problem is if you copy the profile to the new machine, and your domain is called "ace" for example and the username is rjolly it will make another new profile called rjolly.ace and wont load the copied one. Do you have rights to reset users passwords? there is a good tool in xp called the files and settings trasfer wizzard though personally i prefer to build the profile from scratch.

i think your best bet is to change the password if youre allowed or have the power, log in as them, make the profile, copy all the docs etc from the old profile onto the new one, log out. Leave a note saying their password has been changed to say Password1 for example and set the account to ask for a new password when they log on. Problems will arise however if for example they acces thier mail from home etc.
