checking internet connection # ???
 

Having had to do a complete re-install tonight after getting my first computer virus in 7 years !! have obviously had to set up my broadband connection again ( pipex )
installed the modem and double clicked on the icon and my connection opened, can someone explain how I check exactly what number is being diallled by my pc to access the net ??? did not specify a number but it is dialling up something !!

just want to make sure its the correct one !!!

using w98 if anyone can tell me exactly how to check this dialled number ??

Broadband does not dial a number. It is only dial up that dials a number.

With broadband you are auto hooked up straight to your supplier through the phone network (this is why it takes a while to enable your connection when you first got it). All you have to do is supply a username and password and you are in. :)

Also, get better virus protection :D AVG Free edition is, as its name suggests, free :) It is also very good and has saved my machine several times :)

You can also get a program that can save images of your machine peridoically. Therefore, if it all goes tits up, all you do is restore the image to have a fully working machine (saves a lot of time). Acronis True Image and Norton Ghost do this.

Okay that great thanks for the info, was just a bit confused as they do mention in there originally supplied info sheets to leave the area code box blank but type 0,38 in the telephone number box.

If yor using an adsl modem it uses dial up networking to establish a connection. Dial up networking requires a number to dial, so stick anything in the number to dial box.

Dailup networking ,sorry to say does not use any number to connect ADSL.

The number 0,38 is the vpi/vci.

The default values are VPI=0 and VCI=0, and these settings must match the values configured on the Internet Service Provider's digital subscriber line access multiplexer (DSLAM) on the subscriber side.

Usually this is set to vpi=0 vci=38. changing these values in your network/ adsl setup to a diff number will result in no connection.

Every PC I've built that uses dial up networking with an ADSL modem insists on a telephone number being entered. I always enter the users home number as it will not let you continue until a number has been entered. I agree that adsl does not dial a number.
