Anyone driven this sort of distance from the UK? Is it viable, baring in mind I get 35p/mile!

Channel Tunnel then drive towards Amsterdam on the E17. Off the E17 and head towards Germany [I think its the E31 but check].
The roads are very straight ie good visibility and lots of high speed [+140mph]driving.
From London to Hannover I used four tanks of petrol and covered over 600 miles.
Wish I got 35p/mile. Petrol over here is cheaper and you get 98Ron [PPP's preferred tipple]. Make sure you do an oil change before and after your journey.

Off the Chunnel head toward Calais on the E40.
Keep on the E40 until you come to GENT.
The motorway splits and you join the E17 heading toward BREDA. Anyway, stay on the E17 till you reach the E31 which takes you into Germany and even faster roads.

I drove to the Monaco Grand Prix via Germany this year. How many days can you take to get there and back? Use a route planner to check how long the journey will take.

I agree with Bajie about an oil change, I brought my service forward by a month just to be on the safe side.

Use a fully synthetic oil if you can, anything less will not be able to withstand the turbo temperatures if you are doing 120-140 for several hours at a time. Motorways are nearly empty in places in northern France and still have less trafic than ours in Germany.

mmmm..... autobahn

I drove to Munich from Teesside (via NSF Hull) and back in July for a fire show.

Autobahns are great, if only british motorways where as quick and disaplined. You can travel at unristricted on about 50% of the autobahns, mostly away from major towns and citys. The drivers are very disaplined (except the Audi A4 drivers that seem to have a point to prove)and move over if something quicker is approching. Can get very tiring driving at fast speeds and found that about 120 was about right as any faster and you got tired from concentrating too hard.

Took 8 hours to drive from Rotterdam to centre of Munich with 4 fuel/food stops. If you plan to use super (may as well for the price and peace of mind at the speeds you will be travelling) make sure you read the pumps as some say super and some superplus. Plenty of petrol stations on the autobahns, usually every 40KMs.

Would do it again but take a passanger/navigator if you can as it can be quite difficult reading German roadsigns at 120MPH+.

Peeps, thanks for the advice, unfortunately my company woke up earlier today and realised that paying me for a 2000 mile round trip was going to be pricey http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif so I've booke a flight with Buzz to Berlin (89 quid return) and a hire car for the week for 114 quid...at least I'll be getting a Golf MkIV.

Ive been on a car to Germany before on business although I wasnt driving. For business, I wouldnt recomend it, it takes too long (you loose a couple of working days), it cost to much and is tiring even if you aint driving. So from a business it sucks.

Plus you never have the right currency when you want a break on the way !!

Fly, fly .... there is no faster way - the car has no chance.
