Cornwall recommendations
 

Me and Mrs PeteT are off to Cornwall in a weeks time for a holiday (based in St Agnes) and I am looking for recommended places to go, things to do, places to avoid etc...

So far the only definate is The Eden Project (were both professional gardeners :rolleyes: ).

Just got back from a week there myself. I'm not really the type to go and look at all the tourist attractions though, prefer going on nice long walks along the coastal path and on Bodmin Moor.

On the subject of which a place well worth a look is The Hurlers and Cheesewring on Bodmin Moor, the first being a set of three stone circles and the second strange rock formations on the top of a big hill. If I remember I'll post up a few pics this evening. Park in a little village called Minions on the moor, few tea shops, pub etc.

Err, my wife is a keen gardener and so we went to the Eden Project and were disappointed, frankly. (Nice bit o' engineering mind you!).

Go to the Lost Gardens of Heligan instead. :D

Erm, oh yeah and if you're not sick of Gardens, there's one called Lamorran (I think) if you search for it on the 'net. It's on the northern coast and is an Italian style garden on a steep hillside down into one of the bays. It's stunning - Really beautiful. Might not be open at this time of year though... Shame.

All on the north coast with a good costal road to drive along too !

Depends what you like, St Ives is stunning but very busy, Newquay I am sure you know, Penzance & St michaels mount are worth seeing, Truro is a lovely town, with good shopping, Padstow and Tintagel are cool if the weathers good.

On the South coast, Mevagissy and Fowey are both beautiful places, Falmouth and Looe are bigger resorts with plenty to look at. I have surfed most beaches esp' on the north coast and all have there attractions, but are more rugged than the south coast which is more like Devon being cosy and more wooded.

Biggest prob I always have esp' in the smaller resorts is parking!

National Maritime Museum at Falmouth is well worth a visit.

Was very disappointed with the Eden project, both in the content and the layout. We also found numerous grammatical and factual errors in their information boards, (which I have pointed out to their admin staff, and they promised to correct :)). The lost gardens are much, much better / nicer imo..

Charlestown is worth a visit. A small harbour, but they usually have a couple of tall ships in there (i.e. 3 masted sailing ships).

The ruins of the crowns engine houses at Botallack are also worth a visit. Can be quite spectacular on a windy day...

Port Isaac is also worth a visit. You can't drive in, but park outside and walk in. Roads are too narrow to have traffic going down them :)

Having been born and brought up there I'm slightly biased .... :D Though when you live somewhere you never visit the same places as the emmetts !!!

But go across the King Harry Ferry and visit St. Mawes. If you go to http://www.kingharryferry.co.uk/ then the web site will give you more info.
On the way down to the ferry visit Trelissick Mansion/Gardens if you're into gardening.

Particularly biased here as I was born about a mile away ....

I second the recommendation for the National Maritime Museum.

There are 2 excellent gardens on the Helford river, which is near Falmouth. They are Glendurgan and Trebah. If you visit them have your lunch at the Trengilly Wartha Inn, if you can find it. It's near Constantine.

The Lizard peninsula has good cliff walks and a couple of good beaches - Kennack and Kynance, and some lovely fishing villages.

I'll be staying in Cadgwith for 2 weeks this October.

Recommendations for Cornwall? Don't go:(

Last time I was there, August 1980 something, I was therer two weeks, it rained EVERY day except the one we went to Tintagel.

And when I say rained, I mean virtually non-stop, pouring. Like living in a fekkin shower, with it stuck on. No wonder the place is nice and green. It must be the p*ss-pot of Europe!:(

St Ives is very nice, been there a couple of times. Just watch the gulls for taking your pasties!!

Unfortunately I have;) quite a few times. Stayed in the Travell Inn on Lakeside Retail park.

Lovely view of the steelworks from there as well:D

Jeez:eek:. And when the wind is right, the stink will wake you up, and the grey metallic dust coats everything:(

There's a Travelodge at the west end of town now, about 100 yds from the end of the M181, or go upmarket, and stay at Briggate Lodge about 100yds from the eastern motorway exit to the A18. It has a 27 hole golf course too:)
