He was actually given permisson from the wildlife trust to shoot the Hippo, but seeing as you didn't watch it all you wouldn;t have known that would you.

I think with big game hunters its only sporting if they even the odds.

For example, a lion hasnt got much chance against a huge power rifle, but I reckon the hunter should get ten minutes to try and shoot the lion - if he hasnt killed it by then, he gets the gun taken away and booted out of the land rover and the lion ( now pi55ed off at having being shot at by some nobber ) gets his turn.

The Lord whatever his name was was a weasel of a bloke, and some of what he was doing was illegal.
The other guy was different. He paid good money to shoot a hippo and the money go's towards conservation/animal welfare. Also as soon as it was shot it was skinned by the locals and the meat taken away for food.It was part of maintaining managable levels of wild animals.Perfectly fine imo.

I only caught the end of this program too. I'm not sure if I heard this right, but at the end when he was shooting the hippo, was he instructed to shoot one of the legs out first?

Cos he took 2 shots to down the beast? I could only see the one hole in the main body. Seemed a strange way to go about it. I know shooting it in the leg stops it running off, but it takes longer for the hippo :(

Paul, I have no problem with hunting provided there is a reason such as controlling numbers or the eradication of nuisance animals but in the instance of the short fat bloke, they couldn'd find the original hippo that was destroying crops so they went all the way up to Zim to shoot the 'innocent' one.

Making good use of the animal by the locals was good to see but at the moment they'd skin a mouse for sustenance in Zim.

They paid good money? Maybe im wrong but that permit he had cost him £1.50?
:Suspiciou

I too didn't see it all, but ffs those 2 were a pair of complete w@nkers. Lord who? :Suspiciou feckin idiot !!!

Luminous 30 September 2005 01:08 PM

Think you must have caught only very small amount of the program!

That permit did not cost £1.50 :lol1: He had to pay the local people lots of money in order for them to complete the required paperwork so that he could get the permit. Cost him several thousand.

Alternatively the hunter is only armed with a knife and kills his prey by jumping it. Fair play to anyone who can hunt like that, one on one seems fair to me. Shooting from afar with no risk is not exactly sport and for cowards who have to kill for the fun of it.

Killing for conservation/food is a different subject.

7 Foot 30 September 2005 07:24 PM

I think killing anything for pleasure is warped no matter how fair the fight.

Adrian F 30 September 2005 08:53 PM

Yes killing for no reason is unacceptable better remember that next time you drive down the road and a fly hits the wind screen or you run over a hedgehog or may be if you eat meat or fish.

7 Foot 30 September 2005 08:57 PM

Good work genius. :thumb:

You didn't really think that through did you.
