My Scooby is Steaming :o(

Morning morning morning ALL...

I checked the level in my Spec-R header tank this morning before i went to work and it was a bit low, so i topped it up and now it is steaming. When i come to a light or traffic there was a fair bit of steam coming out of the front bonnet air vent and around the sides of it.

I can only assume i topped it up too much and now the excess is going via the overflow pipe and once it hits something warm it is turning into steam.

I got to work and i had a look around the header tank and the steam seems to be coming around underneath the header tank somewhere...is this where an overflow pipe or such runs to?

Any suggestions / help much appreciated!!!

Best Regards

Two possibilities ?????????????

Can I just check, have you got aftermarket headers that maybe heat wrapped ?

Or check the top pipe on the header tank..............obviously take the samco/rubber hose pipe off........not a lot of water should come out as it is only the over flow pipe.....................does it move around by any chance as it should be solid.

I have wrapped headers that when wet or damp...........while the car is warming up they dry out causing steam to come out of my vents........nothing to worry about at all.

On the header tank side I've noticed a little dribble coming from that area running down the outside of my spec r tank..........not enough to get steam, but I would be interested to know your findings as it may be a fault with these header tanks that the top over flow pipe is not welded enough ????????

Hope this helps
Kev.

I have unwrapped HKS headers, so that one rules it out!

I got a funny feeling i have some kind of a leak on the header tank.

By the way, on your Spec-R header tank, do you struggle to get the cap on and off?

Yes

Yes it is a little tough to get it on, but the way I look at it is it is rated to 20 psi ( I think) and I want it to be a bit tight to handle the temps or pressure that I put it under to keep my block cooled, so I can live with it.
I may contact SPEC R and speak to Pete he is always helpful and ask about my top pipe as I'm sure it should be welded solid, not spinning around, therefore I'm pretty sure under pressure the water is finding a way out !!!!!!!
