An end to the annoying 62mph whine ??

After different suggestions to try and cure the curse of the Blobeye, I finally got the Subaru rep at my local garage to test drive my car and demonstrated the noise.

Several short trips later, culminating in the rep riding in the boot of my WRX (wagon) and they agreed to try replacing the rear diff !! (Result)

I have been convinced that the diff was the culprit for some time, but the local dealer was a little reluctant to replace it because they would have to try and claim the money back from IM.

I can see why they didn't want to foot the bill without assurance from IM that they would be re-imbursed - apparently the part arrived yesterday with a cost of £2500 attached to it !!!
:eek2:

(Glad it's still under warranty)

Car is booked in next week so watch this space.

Woo-hooo !!! The whines gone!

Officially - it's the diff !

Can't see Subaru (IM) shouting about it though. :Whatever_

Guess that's going to push the extended warranty prices up again.

is that right

I have had mine in today for partly this reason

i thought it was the windows, but at just over 100 mph it howls and at arond 37 you can hear a faint noise.

I was told by the dealer it was the windows and that they all did it, so is this not the case???

This has been an ongoing problem for a number of 03/04 WRX drivers but pretty much only exhibits the symptoms at around 62mph in the form of a harmonic noise.

There have been a couple of other threads about it:-

http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=432168

http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=440111

but until now I don't believe anyone in the UK has managed to get a dealer to pinpoint the problem.

On a further note the car is a lot quieter in general, the diff also seems to have quietened what I always believed to be road/tyre noise as well !

Mine has had two new diffs. The whine comes back after about 1000-1500 miles.

There is a fix, the bullet in which was posted on the first link below. Something to do with changing the mounting brackets. I haven't had it done yet but will ask next time its in for a service.

Just realised that I'd deleted the jpeg images of the bulletins in the second thread. They should work again now.
