Nokia 6230 memory card limit ?

I'm upgrading my phone so I thought I'd give my old 6230 to my daughter. I bought a 512Mb RSMMC so she could use it as an MP3 player, since the 32Mb card already in it was a bit weedy. I put the card in and formatted it, but it only comes out at 80Mb. I tried the card in a newer Nokia phone and the card formatted to 512Mb. Is there a memory card size limit on the 6230 and if so is there a way around it so I can use a bigger memory card, like a firmware upgrade or something ?

As far as I know the 6230 apperantly has a 512mb card size limit and uses the MMC type cards, I currently run a 1gb card in my 6230 but had to format it on a PC in order for it to work as the phone wouldn't format it, and now it works fine :D :D
Its the updated 6230i that takes the RSMMC cards but I aint 100% sure they have a 512mb limit.

Hope that helps
Mark.

The phone will only recognise upto 512MB or so it says, I have a 1GB card and have over 700MB's worth and can access everything alright ;)

MobyMemory claim to have a 2GB MMC for a 6230/6230i but it needs formatting via a PC first. They have some handy tips on their website.

The RSMMC came with an adaptor so it would fit the full size slot in the 6230. I have no means of formatting the card with the PC (no cardreader - only Bluetooth connection to phone) Is there any way to format the card to its full potential using the phone ?

[edit] This post seems to have answered my question - looks like I'll have to buy a sodding cardreader as well !! Thanks for the replies ..

I brought a card reader off ebay for a few quid, reads all sorts of cards too. And it formatted my 1gb card no problems.

But how do you get all the information on to the card though?

The IR/cables are sooo slow, taking the card out and using a USB/reader is a pain.

I just gave up.

I only used the card reader to format the card in the first place. My phone is connectted to my PC using a Blue Tooth USB Dongle, cost about 12 quid and is automaticlly set to connet to my phone. You can then browse your phone and drag and drop stuff into the required directory on the screen, no need to remove the card.

I finally relented and bought a cardreader from Mobymemory, which will be handy as it also reads Sony memory sticks so I can put MP3s on it when I get the W800i. I tend to use Bluetooth as well for tranferring the odd file as it's less faff than prising the card out the phone everytime I need to put a file on it.

It's a doddle to take my memory stick out of my SE. another cr@p design from Nokia! :Whatever_
