Actually Depeche Mode are frequently used as backing music on BBC programs (usually eastenders) obviously a fan in the dubbing department.

Is Scoobynet fantastic or what?! I asked a similar question a short while ago about some music used in a BMX video. I'd posted the question on a couple of forums and only Scoobynet had the answer!

I've looked on allmusic.com for the exact version of this Top Gear tune but can't find it. Do you know what album it's on?

It was released as part of the remix 81 - 04 package they released last year. Originally from the "Violator" album from 1990, this was an updated version remixed by Linkin Park.

You can, and should, buy it HERE amongst other places. Try ebay for a cheap second hand copy.

The new album is being released in October followed by a full tour.

More likely they did a deal with the BBC and sold them the rights to use all their tunes for a one off payment.

Some people I know who make up a popular beat combo ;) did this (much to their eternal regret) and so their stuff gets used endlessly in BBC trailors, documentaries, etc...

Not now. They are all part of the great '80s revival - they've been through the trough. 10 - 12 years ago it would have been a different story. ;)

Also as a footnote: Just Can't Get Enough was actually a Vince Clarke penned tune and as such I suspect his management would have taken care of the GAP deal (and get the lions share of the royalties)

You're probably right about that actually.

As far as the 80's revival is concerned, not intentionally. They distance themselves from that scene and don't even play any of their "old" stuff live any more. You won't find any DM stuff on any 80's compilations.

"The way it works in the UK is that the BBC and ITV (and
probably Sky) pay a flat annual fee to the performing rights society
for the use of incidental music in their programmes. The PRS then
distributes the money to musicians' welfare or something. This doesn't
apply to adverts or commercial purposes but just for incidental music in
programmes. E.g. two real-life examples:

1) The BBC used People are People for a BBC Children's programme about
science as the main title music for the show (along with images of lots
of machines doing machine things.) The producers would have had to pay
DM for that.

2) But for incidental music, e.g. the intro of In your Room was used
on BBC news a few years ago on a report as the camera panned across
famine ravaged landscape. The BBC wouldn't have paid for that.

If you think about it, they would never have time to clear music anyway
with the copyright holders. Think about how many times they use tracks
as they fade out from football coverage, usually with an appropriate
message in the song ("The Boys are Back in Town" etc.)

As far as Eastenders is concerned, I don't know who schedules the
music, but they're obviously a DM fan. I remember seeing something
about the guys who do programme trailers and previews, and they had
absolute discretion as to what music they could use."

depeche mode are really good lol, top gear like using massive attack who are brilliant they have good taste

In future if you weant to find out the artist and track name of any music call:

Shazzam (song recognition).
Dial 2580 from your mobile.

Just dial the number, hold your mobile up to the music, Shazzam will hang up when it's heard enough then text you all the info in a few seconds.

I've head somewhere about Eastenders that the music in the background, either title or lyrics, are usually relevant to the storyline/whats being spoken about at the time...
