If something has a 'proteiny' smell what is it supposed to smell like?

Been told something smells like protein - no idea what it smells like  :D

Can anyone compare it to something for me please? :)

Thanks! :)

If its proteins in your urine you're talking about it smells like hot welded metal.

eClaire 09 September 2005 11:21 AM

Nope LOL :D Close though. Think larger scale ;)

lightning101 09 September 2005 11:26 AM

Wet and wild party ? golden rain ?

Ammonia and hot welded metal :thumb:

If you mean food groups then:

The average human nose can detect nearly 10,000 distinct scents, a feat that requires about 1,000 olfactory genes, or roughly 3 per cent of the human genome.

While previous science has suggested that our sense of smell converts odours into brain signals just like our vision converts light into brain signals.

While a key protein pathway is used in both, it behaves quite differently in the nose than it does in the eye. At issue is the behaviour of a huge family of proteins called G-protein-coupled receptors. When activated by light in the eye or a molecule in other settings, each G-protein-coupled receptor uses a similar switch - the exchange of a tiny bit called GTP for a related bit called GDP on the aptly named G-protein - to trigger the cell's response.

So they are all different claire :)

God knows. Dried egg white and casein are two protein-rich powders I've used regularly and neither of them smell particularly of anything. They could mean it smells like spunk, I suppose. :D

That's sort of what I was saying, in the other thread. :D:D

You'll notice she didn't need to ask what it tasted like ;)

ajm 09 September 2005 11:42 AM

Protein doesn't smell of anything in particular. What is the context of the question?

This was the last thread I posted on before I went off to douse the bathroom in bleach... Was it even meant for me? :)

Aaaaanywaaaay ajm, when my waters break they are supposed to smell like protein. I don't know what this smells like :)

And no L101, I haven't pished my keks

Oops.... I somehow got you confused with that squares woman from muppets.... I do apologise! :o ;)

Anyway... protein doesn't smell as such.... if it did, we would smell our own smell receptors! :D

Having never smelt human amniotic fluid I can't comment, but I would imagine it smells of very little.

Claire .. when your waters break you WILL know about it! no point trying to sniff it before hand ;)

Reality 09 September 2005 12:58 PM

I'm reliably informed there are other symptoms when your waters break - so you wont need to "smell the puddle" :).

Obviously getting close now - Good luck.

Reality 09 September 2005 12:59 PM

ps - my prawn sandwiches taste different having read this :freak3:

scoobydooooo 09 September 2005 01:55 PM

proteiny , what the hell does this mean ??? :)

EddScott 09 September 2005 03:07 PM

When my GFs waters broke I can't remember a protein smell. All I remember is the gallons of water pouring out of her foof and feeling like I was going to hurl on the midwifes head.

Almost dropped the camcorder!

;)

eClaire 09 September 2005 05:53 PM

PMSL :D

Sooooo funny! :D

Don't worry, I am not smelling the puddle :nono: I just didn't know what protein smells like and was curious! :D

imlach 09 September 2005 07:16 PM

Yes, I'd agree. The stream of gushing water down your legs forming a puddle on the floor will be more recognisable than performing a smell analysis exercise. :D :D

...just make sure you're in M&S at the time....you get what's in your basket at the time free :D

Alternatively, if you're up for it, go into M&S anyway, pish your pants, and clutch your bump in a 'f**king hell - this is it" type manner....make sure you've got at least a case of champagne, 100 ready meals, and some cheese puffs in your trolley....
