Testing a V4 Type R - what to look out for?
 

A local dealership has a V4 Type R for sale at about £7900. I've been toying with the idea of trying a Type R to compare and possibly buy it over my X reg UK turbo.

Apart from the interior what mechanical differences are there compared to say a 5 or 6? I have told them I would prefer a 5 or 6 and am not fully convinced I do want to change but they still seem happy to let me have a go etc.

What I'm not sure is what things I should look out for? Things like where should I put the diff control settings. Not sure if the dealers know to play with the control but they do have a fair few EVOs being ex-Mitsubishi.

Its not too bad looking, couple of small dings here and there and they'll offer a full 12 month warranty on it. They are quite well respected so I doubt they'd cut up rough if things went south on the car. Plus they know I've owned an Impreza for about 3 years so not easily blagged (hopefully anyway!) if things go awry.

sounds cheap to me, if it looks good then go for it (warranty helps)

V5's go for nearly double that price.

V5 and V6's have the newer type of engine and are slightly better.

But for that price mate, I would snap the dealers hand off!

You can get a decent version 5 for aruond £10,000,remember its a buyers market especially with imported vehicles of this type,ie insurance,maintenence etc.

Never seen one for as cheap as that! Has to be a duffer with a re-built engine for that price!

Remember that Type-R's can no longer be imported into the UK, and as such, the demand for them is growing. Prices have steadied on this model and may even start to rise.

Yeah, I guess the price is pretty good and I'm sure that if the car developed something serious with 12 months they would honour any work required (subject to checking their fine print of course!)

I have to say its not as good condition as my MY00 and I don't like the old style interior but perhaps I'm being too fussy. I'd be gutted to sell my current car which I know from top to bottom for something that soon caused me problems. Also, insurance is probably double what I'm pay now.

What are Type Rs like on fuel compared to UK cars?

Also, what about the diff control? Should I fiddle about with it on the test? check it works etc? I/C water cooler if it has one?

iirc Model reports are indeed available for V5's & V6's ...but not for V4's

Yeah but they are at least £2000 to hire!

Type-R's have to be run on Optimax, once they have been re-mapped for Uk fuel.

And they have a smaller fuel tank than the UK Scoobs!

my v3 type-r does 65-75 miles on £20.00 optimax, my uk turbo did 110-125 on same fuel.

There are a couple of version 4/5 sti r for sale in the for sale forum,for aruond 10 to 11.5 on this site....... :)

It doesnt need a model report if it has been regisered before SVA rule changes which it obviously has been for it to be for sale in this country.
I would imagine it to be for sale as a track car if it wasnt uk road legal

You miss the point; theyre talking about restricted supply and future imports; not registering this (V4) car....

I have a type r v4 check the engine number on the log book and number on engine itself to make sure its the original one.

Also check the oil cap and consistincy of the oil as wen i bought mine 1 day later the head gasket went luckly i had warrenty so was covered

If i was you i would take an experienced scooby owner/mechanic with you because as stated seems a tad cheap for this particular scoob.

Also can you name the dealer pm me if you like i know of a few dogdy ones out there from experience can tell u wether me or any1 else has come across them

My W plate STI5 Type R is in the 'For Sale' forum for £11,995 ono if you're interested. Tek3 mapped by Bob Rawle, and just had MOT/service/cambelt.

I'll consider offers, but not silly ones. ;)
