plasma or lcd
 

my 42" plasma went pop last night - total screen failure and 2 months after the warranty finished.

Should I get an LCD or a plasma to replace. I've seen reasonably cheap 37" phillips LCD screens and also 32" sony's that have got me thinking.

I don't know if I can trust a plasma again, but then again it was a daewoo and the model I have sells for only 800 quid now!

Surely you can get that sorted as a gesture of goodwill if it only went 2 months outside warranty?

As above but defo LCD - 32 or 37 inch with HD look the best IMO :)

What about rear projection?

I thought a 12month warranty was a 12 month warranty not a 14 month warranty. Why would they sort it if it is past the date?

I had the basic manufacturers warranty, did not pay through the nose for 'full protection' blah blah

I work for a very well known company who produces plasma screens and I know for a fact our customer services people assist/cover repairs up to about the 2 year mark even though the warranty is only 12 months.

Plasmas cost a fair whack and for them to fail in 12 months raises all sorts of questions so to avoid bad press and legal battles a lot of manufacturers/retailers will cave with a bit of a push.

Firstly, get another plasma.... better than LCD for the time being :D

Secondly, check out www.avforums.com theres a few people who have written to the manufacterer and complained and got it sorted for free, certainly Panasonic have done this with a few customers... Now IIRC (maybe yours is panasonic?) some of the Pannys had problems with the power supply. Maybe its something simple? At least send it off and get it looked at, you might be plesantly suprised, even if its only a £100 bill, got to be better than a £1500+ new telly? (unless thats the plan ;) )

otherwise I'll give you £50 for the duff plasma ;)

Think the letters sent to the manufacturer covers something along the lines of "not fit for sale" "life span of 60k hours" etc etc. Dont get if you dont ask my friend :)

ohhh good buy :cool: its the model up from mine. I do like the newer vieras over the older 1's more sleeker :)

The PV500 screens are very nice, I demo'd the 65 inch version the other day and its pretty damn fantastic :D

Cheers. I really had a hard time trying to decide what Plasma to get and was down to nearly buying the Samsung PS42S5H, but finding the Viera for the price i got it for, i couldn't resist! :D

Even though it isn't needed yet, HD is a must and means the TV won't be out of date when HD becomes widely available. :cool:

Decided then, after speaking to my mate, i should get an amp and speakers package. That way i could hook up everything else with it. PS2, DVD player and NTL. Tannoy FX5.1 and Cambridge Audio Azur 540R, both from Richer Sounds and sounds totally awesome! :D Can't wait for the tele to appear, now. :)

drb5, suprised if your gonna go for all the extras how come you didnt just opt for the monitor version and save alot of pennies?

Do not dismiss LCD with HD before seeing one in the flesh. They are MILES apart from the first LCD's which were, lets face it . . cr@p. I'd have the HD LCD over plasma any day.

Yus I confess, for my sins I am a Panny employee :D And yeah the 65" version is absolutely HUGE! Makes a 42" plasma sitting next to it look like a portable :)

After looking around for the last few weeks at these Id defo go with a HD LCD over a plasma.

LG do a 32 and 37 that look :cool: and exellent value for money :thumb:

But its something like 60,000 hours so not exactly limited :)

What limited lifespan? 10-12 years?

A Viera running HD will blow away any LCD or other plasma currently on the market.

How old was it? Do you realise that the warranty is completely seperate from your statutory rights; which protect you for six years from the date of purchase (five in Scotland & NI) ?

I wouldnt consider buying a replacement; speak to your local authoritys Trading Standards department. Assuming that the kit came with a one year warranty (but this still applies even if it was three years) then it plainly wasnt durable and the retailer is liable to pay compensation (usually covered by funding repair or by providing a depreciated credit (of at least 90% at this age)).

60k hours of use. average 8 hours of use per day (and thats a fair bit) gives you 20 and a half years use out of it.... I think in 20 years time you'll be ready for buying another anyhow. Id like to see you keep a CRT for 20 years without it being relegated to the bedroom or something.....

Simon, do you want to quote us chapter and verse on that? Either you're going to make most manufacturers bankrupt if people learn about this, or there's a catch or three...

Does anything come with a 10 year warrenty? well? a CRT which may of you swear by? a Subaru Impreza which you all love? no none of them do. 90% of all products only come with a std 1 year warrenty, I dont see your point :rolleyes:

Monitor version?

Never intended to get an Amp and speakers, but i was going to find it difficult to fit the Sky, PS2 and DVD player to my Hi-Fi, through my older TV with only 2 Scart sockets.

The Panny i got for under 1600 and the Amp and speakers with appropriate cables, was all in under 500, so it wasn't DAFT money.

You spent (I guess £1000) for a TV that has broke in 1 year and your happy to just forget about it????

As said above it has to be fit for its purpose a Tv that lasts for one year is not fit for its purpose! It should last at least 3 to 5 years, you definetly have a case try consumer direct, CAB or trading standards.

Dunk, not rubbish, Only the Pioneer can compete with the Viera IMO and no LCD can look as good. if anything they look too bright and pixelated at the minute... give it another year or 2 and they'll take over but not at the mo
