New Orleans sliding into anarchy

It's all going seriously pete tong ATM

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4205074.stm

The crazies are trying to shoot down the rescue helicopters now!!

Reality 01 September 2005 03:05 PM

It always was full of nutters with guns - I guess they didn't all drown :(.

Shame for the decent folk caught up in it all.

Markus 01 September 2005 03:18 PM

It is quite mad down there. Looting is rife, and no doubt there will be killings over the last bucket of fried chicken.

unclebuck 01 September 2005 03:30 PM

I wouldn't care to be holed up inside that Superdome

http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/...uper.184.1.jpg

"During the storm, more than 9,000 people took shelter at the Superdome, but the numbers have swelled to 20,000 and conditions there have sharply deteriorated.

The heat, humidity and sanitary conditions are reported to be unbearable, and people are crowding onto the stadium's concourse to avoid the stench."

I guess we are witnessing on a relatively small scale what the breakdown of civilisation would be like in the event of an asteroid strike or nuclear war. Not nice at all. The 'Big Easy' seemed such a care free place when I was out there.

rik1471 01 September 2005 04:41 PM

"The Big Easy" is rough as fcuk! Always has been.

SJ_Skyline 01 September 2005 04:48 PM

Civilization is only 2 square meals away from anarchy!

unclebuck 01 September 2005 09:10 PM

It's getting more serious by the hour. No food, no water, no nothing.

It seems Bush has forsaken his own people!!!!

Kevadair 01 September 2005 09:20 PM

It's a joke, they all knew what was on its way and now that its happened I cant believe how long it takes for emergency services to get the aid in.......

Mind you its not white, middle class america that its happened to. Most of New Orleans is Black, Working Class people that Bush doesn't really give 2 sh**s about.

Iwan 01 September 2005 09:22 PM

According to BBC, 20,000 people at the convention centre with no food or water.

No wonder things are getting ugly. The mayor has requested another 40,000 troops to help out. What I don't get, is how GWB can mobilise massive forces almost overnight to invade another country - but can't seem to mount an effective humanitarian response on his own doorstep.

Apparently he's visiting there tomorrow, I presume he'll be taking 100,000 bottles of mineral water and MRE rations with him on air force one.

I expect he'll take 100,000 personal security guards.... he's gonna need them.

It's starting to look like it may turn into a racial issue.... Bush certainly doesn't give a f**k about the black population of his country.

Fuzz 01 September 2005 09:39 PM

Let me see there is little food and water, people need help...so what do you do.

Start shooting people, firing at the aid helicopters and looting homes and villages...

:cuckoo::cuckoo::cuckoo::cuckoo::cuckoo::cuckoo::c uckoo::cuckoo::cuckoo:

ONLY IN AMERICA

If it is a statement of fact how is it playing the racism card?

Learn a little about how america treats the blacks....preach intergration but practice segragation!!!

When it happens in Florida (full of middle/upper class white retired americans) its dealt with quickly and promptly. You don't see thousands waiting on water, food and shelter do you???

Yes geography has its part to play with New Orleans but the Bush & co could have done so much more.

KiwiGTI 01 September 2005 10:21 PM

pslewis, wasn't aimed at your post was for the people talking about the level of emergency services response and Bush's opinion of blacks.

Maybe I dreamt it but they were warning people to evacuate for days before the hurricane arrived.

Agree. Yes people are saying they could have done more - but don't they always say that in every disaster regardless? Sure Bush isn't deliberately making things worse because the population is black.

Just look at the ITV news on just now its all about one of americas 'poorest regions' and how they are americas 'abandoned people'....

Spot the white man....not many unless I've gone colour-blind!!!

Alan C 01 September 2005 10:37 PM

Do you think we'd be any different? Do you think any Western country would be any different?

Anyone with sense, a car, money and somewhere to go got out long ago. The people who are left are the poorer sections of the community.. Mostly jobless, breadline earning and sadly lacking in decent education that means that they'll take the risk of smashing their community further for the chance of owning a looted TV or some cheap booze..

Do you think some of our chav inner city colleagues would do any different given half the chance?

What does suprise me is that the self proclaimed land of the free, home of the brave, most developed country in the world etc etc etc turns out to be quite the opposite for a large section of it's community.. Now that this thin veil has been removed.. we now get to see some of the reality of the US..

Eye opening, don't you think.. ?

So basically this is the situation.

Bush and the authorities deliberately prevented or didn't bother with the evacuation of black people from the city.

Bush and the authorities withheld emergency services from black people since the hurricane.

There was a deliberate racist decision with the election counts rather than a deliberate decision taken so that certain people would have power.

Nooo....just the population of New Orleans is 90% black.

I really don't think this is case of the Bush government not giving a **** about Blacks - not in the sense of the immediate emergency response. Isn't there just such high casulties because they are living in the cheapest areas worst affected? Also hasn't there been so many warnings before that a lot of people just ignored this one? If anything it comes down to economic significance and the people living in New Orleans not anticipating how bad this was going to be.

Also read a few reports lately describing how America could easily tear it's self appart in cival war at some point in the future. There is such a huge gap between rich and poor, which is growing, and so many guns floating around that the country is a time bomb. As said before - imagine a disaster multiple times bigger - could easily see that type of civil war scenerio as poor from one part decide to 'take' wealth from others. The UK is going the same way - just on a smaller scale.
