how much boost can i run on uk pistons

i have a uk my00 which has the current mods

PPP ecu
sti ver 8 intercooler, walbrough fuel pump,
full decat system with open neck downpipe and an IHI VF 30 turbocharger just how much boost can i run on the std uk pistons and other internals. Does anyone have any experience of the boost levels which are safe to run at. with a remap what levels of boost are obtainable on uk internals.

turboDean 27 August 2005 09:45 PM

With a boost controller (no re-map) about 1.15-1.2 bar but because you have changed the turbo you should have a full remap anyway.

My local tuner told me you can run about 1.4-1.5 bar with a full remap done properly. When i get mine done i'm hoping to run about 1.4 bar. If you get the map done by someone who knows what they are doing they should only do it to a safe level anyway. Try contacting Andy Forrest Performance or BR Development there both supposed to be very good.

main reason for asking was that i have been informed that the stock uk pistons will not support these levels of boost without destroying themselves and that i would have to install some uprated forged rods and pistons. Can anyone verify this or does anyone run higher boost levels on stock uk internals

I think fuzz runs standard internals and runs 1.5bar (his low boost setting). Produces 400BHP or so

i'm currently running a MY00 UK car at 1.5 Bar, which occasionaly peaks at 1.6

Obviously with supporting mods and plenty of fuel :)

1.5 - 1.6 bar with what supporting mods. What set up does your car have.

Hayward & Scott Afterburner full decat.
K&N Induction Filter with cold air feed
TD05 turbo
MRT Silicone Inlet pipe
Hybrid Front Mounted Intercooler
Apexi Power FC
Apexi AVC-R Boost Controller
Nismo 740 Injectors
Walboro 255 L/H Fuel Pump
FSE 1:1 Fuel Pressure Regulator
NGK BKR8EIX Iridium Spark Plugs
Fuel Rails converted to parallel feed
Crankcase and Cam Cover Breathers vented to Atmosphere
STi8 6-Speed Gearbox
Modena 7 kg Billet Flywheel
Exedy Organic Clutch

It's running at 1.5/1.6 through the midrange and tapers down to 1 Bar at the redline :D

Longevity?

You can run this kind of set-up on stock internals but there are sooo many variables.

What mileage is the engine? How regularly has the engine been serviced? has it always been warmed up and down? How often has it been redlined or subjected to continuous high speeds? Even if all of the above is in place there's no guarentee that the engine won't go bang.

One solution is to go down this route with stock internals and when the bugger does eventually let go then you can look at the rebuild and have all the supporting mods already. IMHO of course.

SiHethers 29 August 2005 02:52 PM

If it's mapped properly and you look after your engine in terms of adequate warm-up etc, your gearbox is likely to give up before your pistons at 1.5 bar boost plus.

No guarantees though.

much better knowledge these days on whats required to get engines to more advanced states of tune.
wasnt that long ago that claiming 350 on a uk was considered herecy.

jasonius 29 August 2005 08:02 PM

my 05 wrx (10k miles) runs 1.4bar occasionally peaks at 1.5bar. safely mapped by Bob no problems. I do run an STI 8 TMIC which helps..!;)

Jolly Green Monster 29 August 2005 11:54 PM

1.5bar on TD05 with standard 170,000mile internals on my 96 UK.

Engine related mods:
Apexi PFC,
Apexi AVCR,
APS front mount,
550s
Walbro pump
SX reg
K&N filter
ported headers
H&S downpipe, centre and backbox.

Simon :)

thanks for the help on this, I was informed that i could not exceed 1.2 bar on uk internals. i know the car now requires a remap but what is recommended either a TEK 3 remap or Apexi from andy f.
