106 GTI - Should I go back??

I sold my pug 106 gti last year to buy my current scoob (my00 Uk Turbo DMB), however due to me buying a business she has had to go aswell.

I am going to be buying a van for the business but want something cheap but still relatively quick to run about in and I am sorely tempted to go back to the Pug...what do you guys think? I loved mine when Ihad it apartfrom the probs with the head gasket I had!!!

Best I can think of for around 3k mark unless any of you have other ideas!!

Senior_AP 25 August 2005 01:55 PM

I always think going back tends to be a disappointment. You always compare it to your first 106. Never seems to be as good.

Try the 306 GTi-6. Test drive one....trust me.

the missus has just bought one, and so far spent £300 on new rad, handbrake cable, other bits n pieces, and an inspection which highlighted poor running (possible lambda sensor death), worn to excess beam bearings, four new tyres recommended, new CV boots and a cambelt needed asap.

They are getting on a bit now, and starting to need lots of work, so personally I'd say no to your original question :D

HTH.

Mine is having a few bits going wrong with it, but every time I drive it I realise how much fun it is so it dosent tend to bother me :) and its only done 40k dread to think what will go wrong at 80k lol

Have had two 106 GTi's and they are superb cars! :D

Only the earlier ones had HG probs, later ones are generally ok.

As Senior_AP suggested, try a 306, as I've also had both a Rallye and GTi-6, cracking cars, more refined than the 106, a different sort of drive.

Why are they more fun!?

They're slower, have less power, the engine has less potential, low spec, etc... ;)

Both are cracking cars though! :D

Well if we're doing pics of our old 106 GTi's then here's mine >>>

I'd go the 306 route (I bought an S16 for just over 2K after a 306 8v XSI). Engine and gearbox are really reliable if maintained - and pretty much go on for ever. But like everyone says above, you'll have to replace bearings, bushes and probably radiator by the time they're 10 years old or so. Buiold qualioty is not great and little things tend to go - having said that though if you factor it into your budget and get all the work done at once, you'll have a mint, fun and relatively inexpensive go-kart to rag around in which is big enough to easily fit 5 people.

S16's are proving hard to come by with decent mileage - and have ickle brakes - you can get a decent GTI6 for about 3K - or an XSI for £1500 - 2K.

106's are for girls and 17 year olds.:D

(actually I'd quite like to have a go in one as I reckon they're probably faster than the 306 as they're lighter - and all the lads I know who have them say the handling is superb... and also lots of tuning bits for them - probably the reason I dont like them!)

How did that happen:eek2:

ewanrw 26 August 2005 08:43 PM

A nice woman driver fecked me up ! the trees didn't help either.

Sued her - then paid cash for a 2005 WRX PPP using some of the money.

Some folks might recognise the photo as it won "Crash of the Month" in Redline Magazine a while back.

wondered why the picture had a funny border, its other pictures from the magazine.

If you bought a new scoob using "some" of the money, you must of got a very nice sum of cash

Fuzz 27 August 2005 06:37 PM

definitely go back....

Had a few of the little devils, Ph 1 106 rallye, Ph 2 106 Rallye, and a Van Aken - 306 D-Turbo.

I am considering going back too if I sell my 00MY UK turbo 2000...

On top of all that, every male pug owner I've seen recently has a seriously fit bird attatched to his arm. :norty: :D

My mate has one which is lowered to the floor and has about 2 grand of engine work. What a beast it is. We reckon its putting out about 170 bhp as was easily keeping up with my old 172. In all honesty there was about a flea's pubic hair between us on the road. We did a drag once and I only beat him cause he short shifter

Great little car and very very fast if you are prepared to spend a little, his is for sale still I think

Notorious 27 August 2005 07:05 PM

any pics? how much is he looking for?

ewanrw 27 August 2005 08:17 PM

Dodgy border from when my brother scanned them into the computer. and yeah, it was a tidy little sum of money (not meant as a brag) but I did break my neck in 7 places.

I was very lucky.

Hi Guys,

i have a 106 Gti and can definately reccomend one. they are quick! alot of people don't drive em right but i can tell you i give mine hell if im racing a quicker car. my mate has an import MR2 Turbo with full TRD system and i am level with that until 100mph. i have an enclosed filter, scorpion exhaust and its stripped and i can run the 1/4 mile in 14.63 @ 97mph, and 0-60mph in 6.03 secs. what do standard UK turbos and WRX's run 1/4 out of interest? havnt raced one yet but im quicker than my mates 172 Cup. breathing mods have really sorted my car out and theres not much than can keep up round a twisty road. i'd definately reccomend one if you want fun.

I kept up with a couple of guys in a Celica GT4 side by side on a nice bit of straight road, they looked kind of shocked a little 106 could keep up with them.

Also my mate owned a 106 gti with filter and a de-cat exhaust and I had a Audi TT 225 and my mate was pulling away until we got to higher speeds, week later the TT was for sale and I bought another scooby.

Also my old Standard MY00 classic UK turbo with just a backbox on, ran a 13.7 seconds at Santa pod on a very cold day, but on a really hot day I got 14 seconds twice and last go managed to get a 13,9. :)

ForesterBoy 29 August 2005 05:55 PM

Howz about a Saxo as a 106 alternative ?

Laugh if you like, but even the small engined Saxo's are decent fun to drive.
