Ok,

Im sure its not just me, but I was of the opinion that LOL was internet slang for Laugh out Loud

I have seen in 2 tabloids (supplememts from both from memory) that LOL stands for Lots of Love.

Is it a conspiracy against us computer nerds, or have they just got it wrong as usual!?

If it stands for lots of love, you guys must be a lot more friendly than I thought!!

I can confirm that LOL does indead stand for Laughing Out Loud. Whoever stated the latter needs shooting.

Opinions were equally split as to Lots of Love or Laugh out Loud.

I just thought it was short for LOLloping old dog.

Quite funny this actually.

When Rich Squires came over for the RSOC national day he got talking with the west wales chairman of the RSOC (new to the net) on this BBS. They arranged to meet and drive up on the Sunday morning.

Rich ended a message with LOL and my RSOC friend panicked thinking it was lots of love and that Rich had dodgy motives http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif .

Funny at the time.

While there is no w3 internet standard on LOL it is widley accepted that it stands for Laughed out Loud. ;-)

I think the newspapers need to RTFM before we all get FUBAR'd

Originally (before the internet) LOL meant 'Lots of Love'. On the internet it has become a shortening for 'laughing out loud'.

So the tabloids are only wrong if they are saying that LOL on the internet means 'Lots of Love', and even then it can be argued that it originally meant 'Lots of Love' and so some people can still use it in that way.

All depends on the context I guess....

DAVE-W 20 September 2000 06:15 PM

Rich,

The plan was that we were going to get in touch with you beforehand and get you to wink http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif at Martin when you met on the Sunday morning.

Then it really would have been the fastest RS500 in britain http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

lol (laughing that is....)
