LCD tv's vs Plasma which are better?

I know nothing about the above!

are LCD tv's a better ownershipo proposition than a plasma tv's, they seem to be gaining popularity, and are Plasma tv's really that bad?

KiwiGTI 05 August 2005 12:37 PM

I think Plasmas are loads better, have a look at sets like the new HDMI Panasonic Vieras.

Patt@firstime 05 August 2005 12:54 PM

Was going to post something like this soon - will keep and eye on it. Ta :)

Yeah but i bet they are not under a grand like some you see.

Are the cheap 42" plasma's under 1500 quid a bit crap?

greenlightracer 05 August 2005 01:16 PM

deffo plasmas , much better quality picture than the crystals , just go have a good look round all off them but i bet u will opt for the plasma in the end, assuming off course u have the money plasmas are more expensive but thats cos they are better ! :)

I got a Sony KE P42M1 a little while ago, it was good value and I am impressed with the picture for a VGA screen. It has a progressive scan which I understand is better for flicker free and for viewing motion. The interlaced scan produces more lines but I do not know whether that is an advantage as far as picture quality is concerned. It is not HD ready but I think it will be some time before that is generally available except maybe from Sky who will charge heavily for it. There may be someone who can put us in the picture! about all that.

I think the picture quality is good on mine and is excellent for viewing sport etc. Can't tell you whether the cheap ones are any good or even reliable.

Les

Patt@firstime 05 August 2005 01:22 PM

Can someone post some examples of decent plasmas/LDSs for me as I think Les it speaking dutch ^^^ :)

Cold Turkey 05 August 2005 01:24 PM

gotta disagree with most of the above ... if you can afford to wait then hold off until next year. LCD will be the better technology for the long term and even if you're happy with the quality of plasma, there will be some bargains around for non HDTV models next year.

Personally I'm gonna wait for a decent HD ready LCD screen :)

The Chief 05 August 2005 01:34 PM

Ok is there any reasonably priced reliable plasma screesn out there then???

wilf 05 August 2005 01:55 PM

A mate who installs high end systems for a living would agree with Cold Turkey - LCDs are expected to overtake plasmas soon.

rik1471 05 August 2005 02:26 PM

What size you lookin for?

Patt@firstime 05 August 2005 02:32 PM

36-42inch

TopBanana 05 August 2005 02:34 PM

DLP RPTV's look good value at the moment

NeilT 05 August 2005 04:20 PM

if you can, wait for organic LCD's - just on the horizon, thanks to a new chip ( AFAIK a Texas Instruments development). Cheap to produce and far better quality than the current offerings.

For now, my Philips 32" LCD with Pixel Plus 2 looks as good as any Plasma I've seen, if not better

Linky, prices etc :)

gso 05 August 2005 05:17 PM

I bought one of these samsung HDTV ready 32" LCD's at a great price from empiredirect...see link below... TV looks great (except when close up) and when connected to a pc (as is the case now :D)...well the quality is awesome...

That just demonstrates though that the quality of the input has a lot to do with the quality the picture appears!!

anyway... cant complain at this price! :norty:

Previously had high-end 42" plasma, swapped it 4 a much smaller LCD screen when moved here as 2 big 4 cottage.
Picture quality great on current Hitachi LCD but hard 2 compare 2 plasma as picture always looks better on a smaller screen anyway.
Picture on plasma was superb but was, as stated, high-end model with excellent black definiton & no ghosting, cheaper ones we looked at were all pretty dire on the whole.
Main disadvantage with plasma is the rapid deterioration in picture quality, noticeable after only a couple of years apparently & after 5 years or so, anything up 2 a 40% loss of picture quality, obviously this depends heavily on how often u watch it.
This does not happen with LCD & if I was looking 4 another large screen tv, would go 4 LCD everytime. Mght have done so orginally but at that time LCD screens were only available in small screen sizes.

just bought a 20" sony wega plasma for bedroom ... picture is ****e on normal TV ariel, but OK on sky - but clearly well short of direct dvd quality.

I figure that obviously the digital sky pic is a better signal and the reason the normal TV reception looks crap is the better definition of the plasma over normal cheap crt which "hides" the crap reception.

or am i wrong and just have a crap regular ariel ?

at the moment it feels like the emporer's new clothes ;)

- mark.

Richer Sounds are doing a 42" Daewoo (IIRC) plasma for £800!
It's easy to take the piss, but I had a Daewoo 14" monitor many years ago, and it was fine.

MattN 06 August 2005 02:08 AM

my LCD is about 3 years old and picture is near perfect.

A mate bought a HDTV and has some demo stuff, he really rates it, personally I don't see the difference, and he gets so worked up about it. He watches a lot of TV though whereas I go out and socialise. Horses for courses.

Leslie 06 August 2005 07:37 AM

Sorry about the Dutch ^^^.

Mine is a plasma, there are two ways of building the picture electronically, there are different types of screen, VGA and the later XGA which is necessary for HD TV. It is better if the TV is HDMI ready because that is the socket for plugging a digital box such as Sky into. The cable will cost £90 !

Hope that helps

Les :)

If it is a plasma monitor only, ie no tuner, u need 2 connect it 2 either a Sky box or one of the freeview set-top boxes but check first what socketry is on the monitor as u may need special cables made up.
Bear in mind also that with some monitors there may not b any built in speakers either so u may also need a separate sound system or add-on speakers 2 run it!
Get yourself a copy of What Hi-Fi or something, they even have a telephone helpline, on Fridays I think!

Patt@firstime 06 August 2005 10:32 AM

Thanks mate :)

Projection System

I sold with my 35" TV and installed a 120 inch remote control screen, and a nice DLP digital projector, and extra long 25' cables... all for about 1200 pounds. It will put any TV to shame. The bonus feature is that the Govt can kiss my arse when it comes to paying thier stupid TV tax. It is amazing how much more spare time you have when you don't sit there canotized in front of the TV all night too. It works quite well for me and my wife. We still are amazed at the size and quality of the picture, it will make you never want to go to a theatre again. Lee

I have a panasonic 42"PWD7, and am very happy with it. I looked into this for some time and found loads of great info on www.avforums.co.uk, loads of knowledgeable guys who are happy to offer advice (bit like here really!!) I would reccomend AVsales in kent who are competitive with their prices and have sales guys who unlike the comet/curry type know what they are talking about
