Desktop Keeps Connecting to Wrong Wireless Network - Help

Hope someone can help, when I boot my pc up it keeps connecting to somone elses unsecured w/less network, rather than my own secure one and I don't like it.

The wireless card icon on the bottom right says it's connected to my network, but when I open it up it tells me it's connected to the unsecured one, I'm a bit worried that someone may somehow manage to get into my PC.

Any help/advice pointers as I can't seem to get it to connect to my own preferred network even though it is visible.

Hello

Does your network have an SSID? If so, you should be able to choose to connect to that one. The default installation (on XP anyway) is that it'll connect to the blank one first.

You should have a tick box that you need to check to allow your machine to connect to unsecure networks. Make sure it's unchecked.

I have a SSID, an it's first in the list (also my network gets the stronger signal so I thought it would also connect to that, but appears not.

Can't seem to find such a box where should I be looking?
I'm running XP with a Netgear card.

can you right on the radio icon on the bottom right of the screen, there should be an option to view wireless networks, you can then disconnect from your current one and connect to a new one:)

Thanks for that, I have no problem in doing this, the problem is it keeps initally connecting to the unsecured network which I am concerned about and would really like it not to do at all.

Also when I've manually disconnected from the unsecure network and connect back to my own if I look in the Network Connection window above the usual LAN High Speed Connection area there is also a line saying Internet Gateway, which I honestly can't remember if it was there before or not, so now I'm worried that my PC is possibly going through my router but then via another PC somewhere, does this sound silly?? Or is it just a case that the Internet Gateway is actually my wireless router?

Any help on the above would be greatly appreciated.

the internet gateway should be your wireless router, double check this by opening the dos prompt and typing ipconfig /all. If you havent changed the gateway it should be the same address as the router. Ill check my dads pc tonight on how to change the default.
