Best way to get a good deal as a middleman

Hi peeps,

Not a problem as such, just want to know how to get the best deal for me (looking after number 1 :D)

Basically a company I do some work for wants to buy about 21K of laptops. Now I have been given free reign to sort it. Now I figure I should get something from this, say a nice laptop ;) for giving this business to the suppliers.

If I said to Dell, here you go, I want to buy 21Ks worth of laptops for someone else, how about a finders fee (free laptop), would they bite.? Esp at end of the quarter ;)

No harm in trying for the freebie... ;)

Are you handling the dosh as well for the deal? Rather than asking the supplier for a free laptop, could you put a small margin on the price of each laptop to the company that would net you enough to buy a laptop - free to you but properly bought from the supplier so it doesn't look like a "bung?"

Not wanting to pour cold water on things but from another slant, £21K isn't a mega sale for the supplier at a guess if you're talking of Dell sized companies (better than a kick in the teeth but...). As a comparison, next year we're replacing all our pcs, laptops and workstations with a supplier and that involves approx. 30k units worldwide which may have a bit more clout...

PS I'm not in IT so things might work by different rules there... ;)

If company are paying your time for doing this for them they might assume that you're not trying to get something out of it?

For "deals" I would have thought that a smaller company might be more accomodating. 21k to Dell is chickenfeed. dl
