How can you tell if a Catalytic converter is dead?

Is there any easy way to tell if a cat is on its last legs?

The cat on one of my sons car went - the ceramic structure started to break up inside and you can hear the bits rattling about - a sort of rinkle tinkle jangly sound. Going through water is a killer for CATS.

the best way to tell is at 2,500 rpm in 2nd gear, slam accelerator pedal to floor an if it dont meeow like it used to then the CATS on the way out !!
