Hi Fi Question
 

I have a Micromega Stage 2 CD player which has a sick transport mechanism and so I am considering upgrading to a new CD player.
It cost £650 in 1995 so I was wondering how much the game has moved on? I understand this is very subjective but how much would I have to spend on a new player to get comparable performance or even better?

Are Micromega still around these days? If they are then it might be worth asking if yours can be repaired/upgraded to current new spec? I know they definately used to do this a few years ago as my mate had one.

If you're going for a new player then I guess you'd have to set yourself a budget and see what's available from the main players in the fields. Then try and listen to them all with your amp/speaker combination to see what works well. Audio-T have lots of branches and can arrange home demos, and they stock Naim, Arcam, Cyrus and Meridian who all have some very nice kit out at the moment.

Personally i'm a Cyrus fan. I had a Cyrus CD 6 (£600) but it's currently away being upgraded to a Cyrus CD 8x which is their top of the line CD player (without going into seperate DACs etc.) and retails for around £1000. The CD 8x scores highly in the group tests for this price bracket, it sounds great and works well with my Cyrus 8vs amp so there was no other choice for me.

I'd pop into a decent local hifi shop and see what they can suggest, maybe also pick up a copy of What HiFi and see what's getting the rave reviews at the moment.

you need to listen to a few mate...You dont say what amp(s) and speakers your using..

For a budget CD,an Arcam alpha 9 is a brilliant CD,as is the Naim CDi....( both old models but superb)

If new,ARCAM FMJ 23/33 is brill for the cash.

I've got an Aura VA-100 amp and Royd Doublet speakers, so its on the warm side of neutral with decent bass.
I was wondering if something like an Arcam CD73 at £400 would be comparable in quality? Obviously I would have to listen to it and others first.
I had the transport replaced a few years back. As far as I am aware, the phillips transport 12.4 used, isn't the most reliable. I have had enough now and want something that doesn't skip unless a disc is badly scratched.
