td05 18g or ihi vf34

wot would be the better turbo to get the most bhp the td05 18g or the ihi vf34 on a wrx 2002 with supporting mods cheers MOMO

banny sti 11 June 2005 07:08 PM

the 18g should give you between 380 and 400bhp whereas the vf34 will max out at about 340 maybe 350bhp.

As above...

Your best off sticking with the standard dump valve to stop your engine sounding like its going to blow up :)

Only put a turbo on that suits your mods and wont break half your car if its too powerful.
Its great putting a big turbo on, but what other supporting mods are you doing?
Remember that big turbo's and more power will mean an increase in both torque and bhp, and its the torque you have to watch as thats what does the damage!

other mods are sti intercooler, sti pink injectors, uprated fuel pump, full de-cat with megan racing headers, aps cold air induction kit and i was going to put the td05 18g turbo on it which should give me good power with another remap 370-380 bhp i hope cheers MOMO

Think you will also need to be looking at a clutch and gearbox within not much time TBH, your going to either have to keep the torque down to around 300ish lbs or it will eat the above 2.
You also want reliability and drivability, a bigger turbo may mean more lag, id ask the advice of people like Andy F, Bob Rawle etc before choosing something that will give you the power but not the drivability or reliability.

PS, id also do something serious with the brakes if you havnt already ;)

I would think from what i have heard that the td05 and IHI vf34 would be on the limits of stnd clutch and gearbox limits. The td05 is prob sailing closer to the wind than the vf34 i reckon.

so wot sort of bhp/torque would you have to start thinking about changing your gear box and clutch the car will not be used as a track car or anything just normal road use cheers MOMO

I thinks its torque that does the damage and general use. Theres other people who know more than me its only what i have read between the lines. 350lbs ft is a figure that is banded about a bit.

What rollers?

I would expect plenty of torque but less power.

hades 13 June 2005 12:32 AM

As regards torque and gearboxes etc - depends a bit on how you drive it and a bit on luck. I know of someone who fitted a TD05 to an 01WRX (with garrett wheel, but broadly similar to a 20G), and third gear lasted a week (can't remember numbers, but sure the torque was well under 350 even at PE's rollers). I know of someone else who ran a standard gearbox for something like 40k at ~370bhp with no problems. Anything over about 320-330lbft and you need to be mechanically sympathetic or lucky or both!
