Mercedes S Class or BMW 740 or BMW 850

Hi all

Has anyone any experience of any of the above motors.

I am looking at an N reg S Class with 59000 miles on clock or BMW 740 on a P Plate with 100k miles or a Black BMW 850 on a M plate with 120k miles.

All are around £7k.

Any thoughts?

regards
Ian

Autocar said they picked up a 2000X 740i for £10000 at auction.

Have you looked into the running costs?

I'd avoid the 850 unless you have deep pockets. When they break, they break big time!

WHat engine does the S-class have? I'd be tempted to go for one of those - best Merc ever!

What about the Audi A8. More understated, better built and no w$nker associations :D

I seem to remember some parts for the 850 are really expensive, exhaust system from BM is £ 2K+ and only they make/made it so beware and do a bit of investigating.

My old fella has an S320 (with 500 badges on ha ha) not as slow as you think once wound up on a motorway, if you really want performance though get the 500. btw he has had nothing and i mean nothing go wrong with it in the 4 years he has owned it

Did he have a 1.1 escort in his youth with XR3 badges on? ;)

I'd go for the Merc aswell :)

Out of the selection you mention I'd go for the 7-series. The old shape S-class looks very dated now IMO. 7-series may only be a slightly newer design, but it looks fresher.

But then Dracoro has it down to a t - A8 over an old big Merc/BM anyday, for exactly the reasons he mentions!!!

I have driven a 740 as a company vehicle for about 7 months, its the 4.4ltr V8 I have to say it is superb to drive,it is fully spec'd. It has done 118k and is perfect.Maintenance is expensive on major services.
The fuel consumption is on a par with my scoob.
They are amazing value for money,a 2nd hand one with full bmw history can be brought for as little as 6K.To think they were 40 ish K new.
I have lways wondered what the 750 V12 would be like, somewhat juicy i reckon.

Go for the 740.

Has to be said, I've always had a soft spot for the 850 - I used to drive one with work. Had the Schnitzer kit on it too

Great car to drive, but rather pricey to maintain...........

My dad has a Bmw 750 il it is a 1996 N regwith 89,000 miles with full bmw service history. Has the later 5.4 litre vanos engine which is 100 times better than the previous motor, also it does 30 to the gallon at 90 mph and is in its element at that speed. Fuel prices as we know change and who cares when you are driving one it's a £80,000 car. I did spot a black 1998 s reg 750 il for sale in ebay this week ( is now in completed items ) with 72,000 miles on the clock and the guy wants £7,800 for it. Has fbmwsh, sat nav, pic nic tables in rear, rear telephone etc it has all the bits. The perfect motorway cruiser bar none.
