340 bhp classic for 3 grand ?

On our work intranet today was advertised a jap import classic for 5 grand, apparently this included a number plate worth over 2 grand, myself and a couple of guys at work had a debate about the possibility of 340 bhp at that price, I dont doubt that 340 bhp is possible but I am sceptical how accurate this is, I would have thought that 340 bhp would be expensive to acheive without spending a lot of money ?

Please peovide me with some plausable sounding explanation of whether it is/isnt possible, I am always sceptical of an adver that says 'Very Fast !'

what age was the car? wrx or sti? early wrx would cost a fortune to achieve that power! late sti's will not!

I bought a 1998 STi4 with coilovers, Link, VF22 and a 2.5 conversion for £6200. Not the tidiest thing ever seen but bloody quick for the money, and it goes properly now that bob mapped it (and binned the other map by that bloke I don't rate, some of you know who I mean ;))

340bhp on an early JDM classic would be:

full de-cat (£500?)
induction kit (£100?)
injectors (£300?)
fuel pump (£100?)
Apexi PowerFC and boost control (£1000?)
STi Intercooler (£300?)
Ported headers (£100?)

So that's £2400 assuming starting with a stock motor, hardly a massive amount of money. You could easily reduce that figure by using eBay etc. With or without the mods, an early classic is only worth £3k unless it's expectional these days.

I know theres people out there who make very optimistic bhp claims for there cars. ive a friend who told anyone that listened that his jdm wrx made 300bhp( even though its an early one,so 240bhp) but the thing is although its lighter as well , my 98 uk turbo pulls much stronger than his wrx and he wouldnt believe me until i took him for a spin in mine. so take those claimed bhp figures with a pinch of salt especially if the seller appears not to have much knowledge of imprezas!

As above, some importers don't help by claiming 280bhp as standard for early WRX's, so change the exhaust, fit induction kit and a couple of stickers and it must be 320bhp, right? ;)
