K&N induction kit or standard airbox??
Hi,
I recently brought a UK 2000 Impreza Turbo. When I brought it it had a K&N induction kit fitted. I have heard from many people that the K&N induction is no good for the engine as it sucks in hot air from the engine bay and can damage some of the sensors? With this in mind I went out and brought a standard airbox which arrived on my door step this morning I then read last night on another thread that I would lose power if I took the K&N off. By the look of it the standard air intake isnt great, the inlet is located within the engine bay, have a lot of you modded this to make it take air from outside the engine bay? So what should I do? Am I really going to lose power? Am I risking a damaged engine with the K&N fitted? Oh and I hate that sucking noise that sounds like i have a boost leak!! Shall I fit the standard airbox or leave the K&N?? Any advise or comments would be appreciated!! Thanks |
Dan, Ive got a MY99 Uk that had a K&N on it. After all the horror stories, I changed back to a standard airbox, and replaced the MAF at the same time. Ive just put a Green Cotton airfilter in it, and it seems good now. (ps, Ive got a spare one if ya need one ;)
Anyway, I cant tell THAT much difference between the two, apart from its a lot quieter inside the car, AND I cant hear the dump valve as much. BTW, apparantly a Nissan Almera or something MAF sensor is identical, and only cost 30 odd quid On the other hand, BarryL on here has an MY00, with a K&N thats done 130k and is still getting ragged everywhere with no issues. Who knows eh!!!!! |
thanks mate..
I thought that the K&N was a big no no but after reading some points on here it doesnt sound quite as bad. The last thing I want though is a damaged engine.... The noise isnt really an issue. I would like to be able to hear the engine for once and not the k&N and the bailey DV :) |
Well, if ya put the standard airbox on, you'll hear the engine, and a quietened dump valve, but the other draw back is, you'll also start to hear the girlfriend/wife saying "SLOW DOWN" ;) Better than a blown engine though :thumb:
|
I dont just get shouted at, I get punched too as she screams, "SLOW DOWN YOU NUTTER"
I dont take her out much :) |
Have you still got the resonator inside the wing? The airbox connects to it, it is fed by a duct to the wing from above the headlight.
Ditch the resonator and you will then get colder air from the wing, and flow more air. A little bit louder than standard, but way better the the noise of a K&N. |
yeah the pipe is still there and TBH it doesnt look very effective as it will still be sucking air in from the engine bay. Might give your idea a go.
What about connecting some extra piping to get the air from outside the engine bay? Cheers Dan |
That's a good idea, and what I am planning to do. I have Morrete lights so I am going to remove the inner lens and have a cold air pipe going from there directly into the air box intake, via the wing.
Would like to get one of those intake trumpets to finish it off, thought I might be able to get one from an ICE shop like they use in ported sub woofers. |
yeah vibe sell them on there website
Might be a little bif though? Pipercross do a nice shiny port. What is located behind the small vents under the indicator lenses? Might be able to hide an intake behind there? |
hi mate, last night i reverted back to the standard airbox removing the k&n that i fitted. my93 classic runs quicker with the standard airbox and this is the second time i have took the k&n back off (first time i thought i must have been imagining it). i too believe that with the k&n on it sucks in warm air and this is why it runs slower than the standard airbox. i think i will try removing the resonater thingy in the wing and see how that go.s
|
thanks for the advise mate, I will give it a go
|
i had a K+N then sold it after hearing horror stories but then decided to buy another 1 and re-fit it lol . . . .
certain induction kits are worst than others but i have been told that the K+N is the best 1 IF you have to have 1 a popular well known mapper told me that, which is why i put it back on ;) |
does any one rate hks induction kit ?
i recently put an induction kit on my car and been told they are no good any one know any thing about them

Anybody tried these Viper things?

from what ive read/seen/done as long as the filter is sucking in cold air its fine. but oiled filters are suspect on the 99 year cars ,because of the sensitive maf sensor on them [so avoid them] k&n [only very very lightly oiled]and sti paper type filters are ok.
the thing your trying to do is avoid hot air from engine getting sucked in as well -thats why people build compartments/or boxes around induction kits. definatly take out the silenser/resonator from the inner wing its just restrictive.and make sure you block any holes that let hot engine air get into the inner wing. the vent/wedge near the front indicator does let air into the inner wing -have a look its got a hole in one of the vanes im sure hope that helps |
does any one know the best dump vaulve (bolt on intercooler type) to put on my car dont really want one to hiss.

Nice hijack ;) As for filters I too have a MY00 X Plate and will avoid induction kits like the plaugue. Im planning to replace mine with either Green Panel one or the Sti one. Best Ashley |
