Do you let your kids in the car without belts?

Just reading the story about the car crash few days ago where the children died....clearly not all of them where wearing belts (i assume, as there were more ppl in the car than it had belts)

anyway.....made me think how many times i see kids not belted in cars - i would never drive off without checking the belts were on the kids (and me) and if i did forget the kids would say straight away.

anyone here not bother with belts on kids? and if so why? just interested in what makes someone NOT bother?

Mines dont even get out the drive without them on !!

Its a disgrace when you see the kids jumping around the back seats

The Zohan 31 May 2005 02:14 PM

Mine is still in her child seat but no, i will not. I make sure anyone in the car with me has a belt on.

The Zohan 31 May 2005 02:15 PM

Saw a lot over the b'hols in the cars, jumping about and obviously not wearing them, it is a disgrace!

Poor Guy 31 May 2005 02:19 PM

anyone who gets in my car belts up or gets out

ALi-B 31 May 2005 02:23 PM

First it starts with no seatbelts then it progresses to getting drunk on the streets at 10, then at 12 years old getting pregnent, Joyriding at 14, ASBO at 16...etc ;)

Wurzel 31 May 2005 02:29 PM

Don't have any kids but I always wear a belt in the car and out of it for that matter otherwise my trousers fall down. :D

I won't drive off with adults in the car if they are not belted up, let alone kids. My dad always used to make us wear belts in the rear, even before it was compulsory. When I first started driving, I had a few friends who refused to wear belts when I picked them up one night. They weren't laughing when I pulled them out of the car and left them at the country pub.

Tiggs 31 May 2005 02:37 PM

pretty standard responses.....so who are the ones who dont agree and whats their thinking?

just went out for lunch, pull behind a Vectra....mum and dad in the front...stop at a junction and i see the kid (10 years ish) lean forward and chat to them between the seats - so no belt. This wasnt some old banger car where you could make a link between cheap car, poor job, retard parent (nice link :D) so why do people with (one assumes some brains) not worry about kids/skulls/windscreen commbo?

ChrisB 31 May 2005 02:39 PM

I was at some traffic lights yesterday and a car pulled alongside in the right filter lane.

What looked to be a mother in the passenger seat with, at a guess, a five year old kid standing on her knee. The kid would need more than a asprin if the driver had to hit the anchors

paul-s 31 May 2005 03:01 PM

I have a habit of not wearing a belt. Dont know why, just dont think about it when i get in the car. Im not asking for everyone to have a go either coz Im not saying its right, I just havnt. Cleary others are in the same boat, theres no real reason for it either. Strange.

TopBanana 31 May 2005 03:12 PM

I know a couple of people who don't wear seatbelts. One even goes so far as to wrap it around his right arm so it looks as if it's on to the casual observer. God knows why!

how old are you? seems odd that anyone under 35 would do this unless they were not required to belt up as a kid.

it would take an actual effort for me to NOT wear a belt its so ingrained.

paul-s 31 May 2005 03:15 PM

The only reason I can think of is that its either uncomfortable, restrictive and doesnt allow you as much movement when driving. And NO im not saying this justifies not wearing one, but its probably the reason those that don't, don't.
I dont however if I had kids then I would make sure that they were belted up on all occasions

hutton_d 31 May 2005 03:58 PM

Hmmm. This is one of those situations where (a lot of) people call it like speeding - i.e. if you speed you'll all be killed as will all of the children in the streets you drive down. In this case, don't wear a belt and you are bound to be thrown though the windscreen as soon as the wind changes direction ......

I have to say that 99.99% of the time everybody, kids and adults alike, will be wearing their belt in my car. However, there are times when it is quite safe (or a lot less dangerous if you prefer!!) to take it off for a while. Getting stuff from the back seat e.g. (when you're a passenger!!). And even sometimes on a long m'way journey when the road is quiet I'll have my son in the front with me to a) shut him up or b) see what's wrong (he was rather ill after a week away recently).

Like all these things you have to apply common sense *at the time*. Note the last 3 words .....

Cheers

Dave

PS: sits back and waits for the flak to fly about what a totally unsuitable dad I am ...

S.B. 31 May 2005 04:02 PM

The kids always wear seat belts :)
Wouldn't make adult passengers wear one it's their choice :)
Don't always wear one myself either, that's my choice ;)

dont see the point?

forget linking it to speeding.....very seperate issue.

not saying you die if you dont wear a belt...but in the abscence of a good reason not to wear it...why not?

as for kid in the front....so what? or do you mean he didnt wear a belt?

what if the adult is sat behind you?

paul-s 31 May 2005 04:11 PM

If your an adult, its your choice.
As for kids, i would make sure they wear one,

SirFozzalot 31 May 2005 04:17 PM

Always wear a belt myself...feel uncomfortable without one now! Just don't feel secure if I'm not wearing one. Make sure my passengers wear them too...remember the kid-turning-into-an-elephant-on-impact advert and killing the driver from behind.

Was on a safety course at work recently and they went on about driving safely on site. They showed a few cases of people having relatively slow impact crashes whilst not wearing a seatbelt. The results were still horrendous!

The general gist was this:

Most people talk about being thrown through the windscreen, however this focused on the low speed crahses which still have the force to throw you forward and hit the screen but not enough to put you through it. The result was that the passenger was thrown forward and up...hit the screen enough for it to split but not completely go through it...then gravity takes over and pulls you back down....scraping your face down the broken glass effectivley slicing your face off!!!! Very nasty!

4X4BOB 31 May 2005 04:20 PM

For those that would let an adult decide if to wear a seatbelt or not, is that for adults seated in Front, Back or both?

Reason I ask is because I won't drive off until the rear seat passengers put their belts on. If they don't and you have a crash, even a small one, its YOU that they are going to hit when they get thrown forward which potentially can kill YOU.
So THEY don't get a choice, they wear the seatbelt or they get the Feck outta my car!

For those who don't wear seatbelts as a matter of course:

Would/do you wear one on a track day?

If you would, what are the different motivators?

OllyK 31 May 2005 04:47 PM

Always wear a belt in the front seat, tend to be a little more lax in the rear, guess that was due to growing up when it wasn't law to wear them in the back and not many cars had them. Tend not to wear one in a truck for some reason, probably due to most of truck driving being cross country at low speed and the belt becomes a PIA.

good question as many people on here admit to driving on the road faster than they could on most UK circuits!

jasey 31 May 2005 05:00 PM

Girl I used to work with didn't like wearing a seatbelt coz it creased her blouse.

She changed her mind when she went through the back window of her car as it rolled over.

She's now got lovely scars on her face :(.

Still - She is Alive !!

I know people that don't always make their kids belt up because their kids sometimes get stroppy if they are belted in and they aren't going far.

They decide on the easy life option

Bravo2zero_sps 31 May 2005 05:00 PM

My 7 year old son wont let me drive so much as off the drive if he hasn't got his belt fastened. He will shout at you if you so much as even try. Thats how it should be and i'm very glad he is like that. Its not difficult to make your kids wear a seat belt.
