PUG 205 GTI 1.6 - ebay again!
 

Just bought a little Pug gti 1.6. 1990(G), black, full leather interior - looks the bollox, with 102k on it. It's even got a decent bit of MOT on it too;)

It's also just had the head gasket replaced.

I paid virtually nothing for it LOL.

What are the areas to look at on these with regard to mechanical/electrical faults?

I've never had a GTI before.

Check the rear beam out. If the rear wheels look like /--\ or |--\ or /--| then it may need a new beam.

Main electrical problems are the tachy relay, SAD and brown multiplug. Coil and dizzy can be a pain as well.

Managed to pick up a "G" 1990 1.9GTI for £250 the other week too :)

Whats this SAD thing everyone goes on about?

I'm not keeping it, so no money will be spent on it other than petrol!

My plan is to thrash it about for a bit then sell it on (at a profit, of course) once the tax on it ends.

It's merely a couple of months of free motoring fun;)

Went out for a proper play in her last night - quite demanding little cars to drive when compared to one of my auto mercs! I forgot what putting a bit of effort into driving was like LOL.

The 1.9 wheels always sell well, always a nice extra to have :D

Remember to watch out for the lift-off oversteer ;) :D

Supplimentary Air Device. It will be the reason why your 205 GTi kangaroos down the road,never idles properly and stalls at traffic lights.

It's a 205 rite of passage, just like the fact that the sunroof will leak.

My 1.6 GTi did it and I never managed to fix it. It was fine all the time it was warming up but as soon as it was warm it would stall as soon as you dipped the clutch. If you were braking with the clutch in you had to break for a bit then rev the engine a bit then resume braking. I even increased the idle to speed to try and compensate but it still sometimes stalled.

Never managed to fix it and traded it in as I hated that car SO much.

Personally I thought the 205Gti was one of the most over rated cars ever and much prefered my Uno Turbo that I had before.

Yup. Mine jumps like a fooked kangaroo. Still, it makes it more of an interesting drive. These cars are fooking mad - the MOST fun i've ever had in a car, bar none.

Sunroof doesn't leak, though;)

Might even keep it.

I only paid £280 for mine and it's mint. The last owner paid over a grand to get the head gasket/skim/belts and all 4 tyres renewed, so one of us is laughing:D

Normally the seals perish, 5 min job with new tap washers or silicon sealant

Best way to run these, is rag the arse off of it, it may or may not break, if it does just fix it.
They don't like Miss Daisy still driving, they are not much fun in town, but they are on B road blasts

All new seals on it. I opened it today then went through a car wash and not a drop came through.

I ragged the arse of the poor thing last night for a bit and today for a couple of hours. I'm fully converted!!

I've owned some high powered motors that would wipe the floor with the pug but I've never had the same feedback. It just feels fast despite being not that fast! Funny little cars.......

Love these cars. I used to have an 'H' plate 1.6 - with the uprated 115bhp engine and no power steering. That car taught me what 'steering feedback' meant (something still sadly lacking in Scoobs and most other modern cars). Lift off oversteer can be a little interesting too. If you commit yourself to a corner - don't back off midway - or if you do make sure the road is wide with no hedges :)

Get it right and the 205 GTI is one of the most rewarding cars to drive. It is still rated as one of the finest handling FWD cars ever. Uno Turbo may be quicker in a straight line, but that's it. These cars aren't even in the same league handling wise. If they're over rated - the entire global motoring press and a fair proportion of the buying public (25% of all 205s sold were GTIs) must have got it wrong! I believe Evo (or Performance Car as they were) voted it car of the decade. 205s were never about 0-60s and straight line performance - much as the basic S1 118bhp Elise is not the quickest car in a straight line. Point either of these cars down a demanding road though and you'll know why they were so highly rated :)

As regards the SAD problem, I managed to control this with a little bit of regular maintenance. Casting my mind back - I remember a little brass screw on the air intake for the throttle body. This screw used to get seriously caked up with black carbon. If you take it out and clean it with WD-40, idling is smooth and you don't get the stalling problem. I used to do this every couple of weeks - normally when I cleaned the car. You'll be amazed at the difference.

Uno Turbo :eek: as Chris said faster in a straight line nut try putting it round a bend :nono: also they rot quicker than they can go round the bend plus possibly the worst electrics of any car I've ever known.

So how do you go about fixing the SAD thing ? We have a test day booked for friday to use the pug in anger for the first time. That should be quite an eye opener.

Aye, the newly rebuilt engine is sat in the garage, and a borrowed engine crane is being delivered tomorrow. Need to attach the gearbox tonight after i've fashioned a clutch alignment tool, then the engine can be in this week. Just induction/cooling/ECU to sort after that then it can have its first breakdown ;)

Bit tricky though as I have to prep the 405 this week as well for its first trackday next Sunday at the FCS.

Scoobylav - easiest to get a new SAD and plumb it in.
