M4 speed traps

Sorry if this SIAL, but I drove along the dreaded Wiltshire streach of the M4 this afternoon and was amazed at how law abiding EVERYONE was being. No sight of obvious cameras either.

Must say, even in wifey's Sport sticking exactly to 70 is very hard.

Exactly what I was saying the other day. Since the introduction of the cameras, that stretch of the M4 has become a much calmer place...

Neil Smalley 06 May 2005 10:10 AM

Thats because everyone is using the A roads, so as not to get done ;)

Iain Young 06 May 2005 10:13 AM

I doubt it. It'd be much slower using the A roads than driving down the M4 at even just 60mph, and besides, the A roads have cameras on them as well :)

wonder what they'll blame the next accident on now that everyone is doing 70... they'll have to start banning other stuff that could distract you like car stereos and passengers

erm... no! Last time I followed someone who knew a shortcut (avoid raodworks and/or accident) he was doing close to 100 mph in a Toyota Previa or similar down a normal road. OK, it was straight road but it still had junctions on the left hand side.

Just come down the M4 from Bristol to Bracknell... there was a waste of police resources speed gunning traffic westbound just west of Junction 15, so be warned!

What point are you trying to prove there? If it was that the person you followed was a nutter, then I see your point!!!

There are regularly numerous speed traps on the A roads between Chippenham and Hungerford (especially on the A4). If you didn't get caught, then you were lucky.

So you followed some nutter doing 100mph past junctions and don't see the irony? ;)

Still there about an hour ago, plus a scamera van on the bridge a couple of miles further West

SiDHEaD 06 May 2005 04:18 PM

There was a post about this on S2ki and some people were actually choosing to use the A roads and having a lot more fun too :D

Iain Young 06 May 2005 04:28 PM

Not sure how you can have fun on the A4, but still, each to their own. I drove down it from Hungerford to Marlborough and onto Devizes last week, and counted 3 camera vans.

Still, if it keeps the M4 as calm and as nice and flowing as it has been the last couple of weeks or so, then they can keep using them IMO :D

SiDHEaD 06 May 2005 04:38 PM

Not sure if thats where they went...

Tiggs 06 May 2005 04:38 PM

lol...what a joke!

M4 is calm and flowing so people get off to go down the A4 at 100mph which means they:

use more fuel
travel further
risk getting banned

..................................and prob take longer!

There's not another A road though, unless you want to add miles to your jouney...

Probably the B4000 and B4005 from junction 14, through Lambourn Woodlands, Baydon, Chiseldon, Wroughton, etc. Easy to do 100+ along some of the straights there I'd imagine.

Lots of dips, villages, horses, turnings, and slow moving traffic though.

Useful alternative route when the M4's shut due to yet another smash however.

The stretch of M4 where the cameras now sit collecting money has always been a very free-flowing stretch of motorway, its just now everyone travels along at 75 instead of a less bunched-up 90.

The camera partnership must be pretty pis$ed off - maybe not the money-spinner they imagined. I went along there today and didnt see the little money grabbing van on the bridges at all - no doubt busy at a more lucrative spot on some A-road.

Mr Scoob 06 May 2005 08:52 PM

I drove from Cardiff to the M25 today on the M4 and there were no camera vans on bridges. Most people were travelling at 75 instead of the old average of 90+. Everyone watching their speed all the time instead of the road cannot possibly increase safety. Some vehicle had dropped a ladder in the "fast" lane which is horrendously dangerous regardless of what speed the traffic is doing. Ironic that the idiot who failed to secure the ladder will get away with it while the police concentrate on fining other drivers.
