Ahhhrr - Black Cars

Hi all.

My new STi is my pride and joy, but recently having doubts about the colour choice, great when it's clean, but that's like 5 minutes after it's washed until it rains or i drive it.

Anyone else regret buying black, or perhaps have some tips about keeping the bloody things clean ?

I've got a black Forester, looks  when clean but i agree with you, it's a job to keep that way.

I use Swissol wax on it which seems to help a little.

I regret getting black... Wish I'd have gone for blue instead now :(

The cars supposed to have the supagard stuff on it, but it doesn't seem to help much. A light shower and the car is stinking...

I dunno if this is a black car phenomenon or what, but I've never seen a car attract so much bird $h1t in my life. No joke - a couple of times I've gone back to my car and it's been covered all over by the stuff. None on the cars either side of me - just mine :(

Tempted to go for a respray...

Interesting. I'm just about to buy a new car and was going to go for black (mainly because blue is soooooo '90s and I'm bored with silver) but the problems with keeping it clean are begining to worry me. I had a black Cossie in the early 90s and even when parked in the garage overnight is seemed to attract dust and never looked quite clean in the morning. I remember vowing then never to have another black car. Hmmm...

I had a black Audi about 3 years ago and that wasn't as bad. Maybe it's the paint Subaru use!

If you're going for an Impreza, buy a white one!

R 14NS R 05 May 2005 09:39 PM

had a black fto before my current car, agree its a bitch to keep clean but when it was, it looked awesome.

now got a white scooby and thats just as bad.

go for black, it is worth it when it is spotless!!

Luminous 05 May 2005 09:46 PM

Had a black Peugeot, it was only ever clean for about 1 hour after washing. Was a real pain in the arse, never getting black again.

Don't despair, just remember when you want to look really cool to wash it :D

I agree - my Octy has to be washed weekly but when it's clean it looks fantastic. Not at the moment, though

I rest my case !

Dark blue's just as bad, gorgeous when it's clean but that only lasts for a day or so.
Its even ok when it rains - at least while the car's still wet, but when it dries you end up with a freckley car grrr!! :freak3:

wrxsc00by 06 May 2005 01:39 AM

i got a black MY93 wen it gleams it GLEAMS! but only for a day. after which it looks like somones emptied their dyson over it. Better check that noone is actually doing that. i think white is pretty much the same - expect for the "swirlmarks" and stains when polishing. Black and white r both eye-catching without being psychadelic.

matt-c 06 May 2005 08:05 AM

Thanks for the comments, not sure i could live with White though, I'm off to buy shares in Swissol, Saturday tomorrow, so guess what I'll be doing !!

Foot_Tapper 06 May 2005 09:02 AM

At least your more concientious with white or black. And they look the mutts when sparkly.

Dracoro 06 May 2005 09:57 AM

If you're worried about the car getting dirty quickly then the last colour in the world you want is white! Given the reason for the thread, I can't believe people have suggested it. :D 2nd worse is black. You need a lightish metallic if you want it to stay clean.

Hanley 06 May 2005 10:44 AM

Plenty of wax and it helps a lot.

IMHO black is the best colour when waxed

Worth the effort when it looks like this

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...I/DSC00220.jpg

Also easier to wash when it has been waxed

:)

Luminous 06 May 2005 10:54 AM

Silver is one of the best colours if you do not like to clean your car. I've owned mine for a month, not washed it yet - and it still looks OK :D

wrxseeker 06 May 2005 01:08 PM

I had the same worries about keeping it clean as you before I got my Black '05 WRX, and yes it is pain but when its clean it look soooo good.

ian_sadler 06 May 2005 01:14 PM

I have a black ATR and a black Focus (company car poo) and as said they're great when clean but it only lasts about 30 seconds.

The biggest probelem at the moment is nextdoors willow tree covering it in YELLOW catkin pollon

Where as my Terzo used to look great for ages (both the ATR & Scoob had been swissoil'd).

Ive owned a GT4 in both black & white ...& black, as echoed on here is an absolute bitch to clean & keep clean! ...black shows up water marks, swirl marks, dust & bug splats like no other colour! ...white was an absolute doddle in comparison & as a rally rep actually looked pretty good when 'muddied' up! :)

Nick_Cat 06 May 2005 01:53 PM

Black also shows up the slightest dent and crease like no other colour I've known. Sometimes I can catch the side of the car at a certain angle and see very slight marks where I assume dents have been previously removed. Look at it from a different angle and they're not there. I'm sure this wouldn't be the case with a lighter colour.

My STI is black, 6 months old and the paintwork is fugged!

Only ever handwashed but I have swirls everywhere. Stone chips seem more prominent, supermarket dinks and "accidental" scratches really stand out nicely.

My last car was a green WRX and that was easy to keep clean.

BTW can anybody recommend a decent wheel cleaner that won't dull the gold lacquer??

Still love my car though...

MJW 06 May 2005 03:59 PM

I have a black WRX, which is perpetually dirty. People say to me 'are you gonna wash your car ?' to which I retort, 'it's a rally car it's supposed to be mucky' ;)

Black is a great colour, just don't sweat it if it gets dirty.

Smeatser 06 May 2005 10:18 PM

WAT IS THIS "TARTS THREAD"!!!!, scoobies are thoroughbread rally cars, who cares about a bit of dirt.... I saw a black wagon the other day - top half black bottom half about 8000 miles of dirt, looked superb!!!!!!

Well my black wagon is only 20 days away and have no thoughts of changing colour what so ever...!

Get a grip PIMPS!

(only joking lads)

r 06 May 2005 10:56 PM

I like black, and I think you also need wax to make things eaiser!....oh and drive sommit else in the rain......

BedHog 06 May 2005 11:10 PM

I have a white wagon - just spent ages cleaning it and it looks superb :)

Not for long though........

I must say it looks equally impressive with mud spattered all up the sides, a tribute to it's rally heritage.

I'm just glad I've finally found a fairly easy way to get rid of all those tar spots - Meguiers Quik Clay, amazing stuff!! First time I've seen a white car shine lol
