Air con not working

Guys a bit of advice please... the air con has stopped working on the MY97.
No cold air...I get a light on the button when I press it..I have checked the fuse in box in engine bay, thats ok.

Is it a re-gas or the compressor ?

Just a thought but does the air con compressor come on when you switch it on in the car. There is a magnetic clutch on the front of the compressor - It is pretty obvious when it spins - Basically leave air con off with engine running - Look under bonnet, then switch it on and look again - Does it engage?

There is a low pressure switch in teh system. If it is low on gas the dash light will come on but it will not engage the clutch. Sounds like it needs a regas.... hopefully not due to a leak in the rad.

Tony.

No dash light, doesnt look like the compressor spins..
is there a relay ?????

Andy McCord 05 May 2005 03:11 PM

Tony, which light comes on in the dash when its low on gas?

Fixel 05 May 2005 03:18 PM

I think he means the light on the AirCon switch itself, which still lights up even when the compressor has stopped working due to low pressure. There is no warning light as such on the dash.

My money is on a simple re-gas fixing it. :)

Yep, as above... by dash light i mean the A/C button light (which is part of the dash ;) ) comes on when you press it.

Tony.

Try the fuse inside the car - It is fuse number 17 according to my book 15Amp, and it is located behind the coin tray near the bonnet catch - Try this first.

I would try the elctrical connection too.

There is a connection to the unit - On mine it is a black wire which goes in the side of the unit and just behind it to the right there is a bullet connector that connects a red wire to the black. Firstly check it is still connected - If not reconnect.

If you have a voltmeter connect the positive end to the red and put the black on the negative battery terminal - (You can use a test lamp too - i.e. between red and negative). Get someone to turn the air conditioning on while you are connected and see if you get a voltage out. Never tried it but would imagine it will be 12-16 Volts. If there is no voltage at this point its electrical (Somewhere!!!!), If there is a voltage then it may be that it needs regassing as has been said!!!

Whatever you do dont short the red plug to anything metal anywhere round it - including shorting with the probes of the volt meter (or test lamp), or you will need a new fuse!!!!!!

I had the same problem, turned out to be a hole in the condensor. There is a low pressure detector in the system to protect the compressor if there is insufficient gas (and therefore lubricant) . The A/C (dash!) light still comes on but you still sweat.
Do as Silver Sonic says and get a leak test first before sopending too much money or time on electrics.

My A/C light DOSEN'T come on but the A/C still works fine (or seems to), will this just be the bulb?

Nick

Am in Dorking, surrey most of the time sonic. will try the in-car fuse, cheers guys.

silver sonic 06 May 2005 06:32 PM

foot_tapper,
take it in to a air con place and they SHOULD check free of charge!

nick-cat deffo bulb or switch never had a switch apart before, it may be part of switch so you cannot replace bulb
