Noise from diff. only on overrun

Hello everyone, I have a RA with a 4.444 viscous rear diff, Everything it quiet under power but loads of noise from diff area when I lift off. this noise is more noticeable when I use 17" wheels. Car has about 2 degees neg camber and been lowered on coilovers. Running out of ideas.

Check oil level.....change diff oil....try different tyre pressures (+4psi front, even, etc)....

What year of RA is it exactly? Are you sure it's a viscous diff in the rear?

The RA is a MY97 the diff is one that came out of a P1, end cover has been take off and the code on the crown wheel means it is deffinatly a 4.444. Looking for suggestions to avoid a long journey to David at A1. Could the drive shafts be at fault.
The oil used is the standard gearbox oil.

Okay well you should probably know that it's not a viscous diff, but a suretrack one if it's from a P1.

I have the same problem on my 94 WRX, completely standard appart from 17s and quite a lot of noise coming from the rear when coasting at 40mph or less... thought it was the rear wheel bearings, so got them replaced and made no chuffing difference at all...!!!

I'm gonna change the rear diff oil to see if that makes a diffence, if not I was going to put it down to a characteristic of the car...???

Wheel bearings are fine, I have just replaced the rear RHS, oil is new and up to the correct level. If it is a suretrack unit does this take std oil, I was under the impression it was a viscous unit, just goes to proove that that Scoobynet is a fountain of knowledge.

Yes the suretrack takes standard oil.
