cookstar 03 May 2005 10:43 PM

once had a "friend" who was caught doin 116 on the M11. had had clean record till then, pleaded he would loose job if banned. recieved 6 points and fine.

quite a touch really

FirebirdUK 03 May 2005 10:43 PM

Ban & fine I'd have thought...

cookstar 03 May 2005 10:50 PM

judge told "friend" would be a ban 9 times out of ten, but the job thing really works, specially if you have mortgage, kids etc

pslewis 03 May 2005 10:51 PM

I got pulled in my old classic doing 128 on the A1 near Wetherby (early afternoon, clear sunny day)

I was stuck in built up traffic for miles and then the road cleared and I booted it a bit (not the most sensible thing to do I know), by the time I saw the police on the embankment it was way too late

I slowed into the left hand lane and waited for him to pull me.

Copper was quite a nice guy, he got me with his hand gun at 128 but my average between point A and point B came in at 111 (I hit the brakes when I saw him). Copper said he would give me a fighting chance with the judge and put me down as speeding at 111MPH.

In my opinion he didn't have to do that and it was appreciated.

I went to Wetherby magistrates all suited up, everyone else waiting to see the magistrate was suitably attired in shellsuits and trainers so I stuck out like a sore thumb, even a guy up for drink driving who stunk of ale!!! :D

Didn't make any excuses when I went up in front of the magistrate, admitted I was stupid, irresponsible and should think more carefully about my actions.

Magistrate came back out after 10 minutes and said they always ban over 100MPH but they were going to give me a second chance as I pleaded that I would lose my job / mortgage if I lost my licence.

I got 6 points and £200 fine.

I remeber when the clerk read out the charge:

"travelling at 111MPH in a White Subaru Impreza"

the head magistrate turned round with a wry smile and said to me

"very fast cars them aren't they son"

I thought yeah I might be lucky here :)

Fine paid and lesson learnt

Also helps with the insurance as an SP50 is way better than a ban in the eyes of the insurance companies :)

Brit_in_Japan 04 May 2005 08:37 AM

Anyone who gets away with a fine and no ban for > 110mph is very very lucky. I would say 99%+ get a ban.

The guidelines the magistrates work to suggest a ban of between 4 and 12 weeks for between 110 and 119mph where there's a 70mph limit. For 120 - 130 mph the ban gets more severe, 12 weeks to 26 weeks I would guess.

Everyone pleads that they will lose their job if they get a lengthy ban. The magistrates here that all the time so I guess is comes down to whether they are in a good mood that day.

For 116.5mph on a 70mph duel carriageway I got a 250 quid fine and a 42 day ban. It was clear, dry, almost no traffice and a letter from my MD to say my job was at risk.

fitzscoob 04 May 2005 08:59 AM

friend of mine just got a 2 month ban and £400 fine (not sure about the exact amount but it was something close to) for 114mph

clean licence etc

Bubba po 04 May 2005 09:39 AM

Just think, pulling you at that speed, they'll probably prevent your engine going pop and a three grand bill. :D

Sorry to rain on your parade but those things have no bearing on the punishment.

You have to prove that losing your licence would cause extreme hardship to a third party.

Rob -
Computer field engineer, with a household made up of a non-driving partner, a disabled 6 yr old and a 2yr old - 6 month ban for 'totting up' (and not proud of it)

xkellyx 04 May 2005 11:50 AM

one of my mates got flashed in he's pulsar with it off the clock on the a127 he got a 2 week ban and £550 fine

Spoon 04 May 2005 12:02 PM

133mph- 6 points £450 fine.

Because I'm good looking.

richardg 04 May 2005 12:25 PM

jods - i heard you had lead boots!!
luckily no experience of this type of scenario

D70 04 May 2005 12:54 PM

I love these threads.

Me, 120mph+ on a dual carriageway, flashed by Gatso. Outcome sweet FA, 'cos I was in a French registered 607.

I always make sure I'm in a foreign car when I return to the UK now, either that or get chauffeured everywhere. All these speed cameras, vans etc mean you spend more time checking your speed than observing the road as I'm sure most of us know.

Good luck to whoever it was got caught.

Jap2Scrap 04 May 2005 01:29 PM

118mph - 3 points (count 'em) and £70 fine :D
