Train spotting...Can't believe people are STILL doing it

Went through Clapham Junction Station on the train this morning. There stood at the end of the platform were a couple of guys, wearing anoraks, armed with a pair of binoculars and a Thermos flask spotting trains. Thought that had died out years ago.

Takes all sorts I suppose :)

A green one with fake fur around the hood I hope ;) :D

I see them everyday as my train stops at CJ. I don't see the appeal. There's can't be more than 10 different types of train. Why not car spotting as there's so much more variation.

Or a girlfriend perhaps although the inability to get one is prolly why they're there in the first place lol :D

dpb 27 April 2005 07:08 PM

Wondered why Telboy hadnt shown this week.....;)

Markus 27 April 2005 07:11 PM

There are certainly more than 10 types of train out there. Things like Class 73's (dual electric and diesel powerd) class 59's, Deltics, and loads of others. When I was a young lad I had a bit of an interest in trains, never sat and spotted them though.

Might have something to do with my Grandfather being a signalman and my Dad being in rail ultrasonics.

....I know some people who spend all there time on the PC as there hobbies.

Some even keep driving the same track day after day, spending thousands in the process.

..oh and theres this other geezer who hits a ball, another who kicks it.

And then theres the odd people who watch people doing the above, apart from the PC of course.

Wierd or what!?!?

pslewis 27 April 2005 09:01 PM

Are these the same compulsive disorder people who do the Anal Oil Change??

I think the similarities are scary!

I keep waiting to see if a class 47 comes up on eBay. Not sure where I'd put it though. I'd probably use the engines to provide electric for the street ;)

Markus 27 April 2005 09:43 PM

I'd quite lkike a class 66, would run around terrorising the South East line :D

paulr 27 April 2005 10:08 PM

Adidas.....brown with fake fur,but thanks for asking.:D

As for Clapham Junction, always very busy but for trainspotting you dont want to be there for more than an hour. You get all the same trains coming back again and again. Its those 11 platforms at Waterloo you see.

Bit of trivia.......

1.Whats the longest one word station name in England?
2.Whats the longest platform in England (outside London)?.

Answers on a postcard please!!!!

dsmith 27 April 2005 10:13 PM

2) - Colchester ? Well it is according to a colleague I travel down to london with occasionally. Its time to get a coffee as we approach colchester before the flood of train trivia starts.....

NotoriousREV 27 April 2005 10:45 PM

Might not be "train" spotters.
Same as don't assume all "beggars" with dogs are beggars.
Want to watch things? You got to fit the environment.

Each to his own of course.

And it does not make anyone else superior in any way if they dont find it interesting or understand why they do it.

True but it's good fun laughing at spods isn't it?

Trainspotting is about as sexy as a fart in a lift.

Iain Young 28 April 2005 01:33 PM

I expect there are people out there who find farts in lifts quite sexy, (although not me I hasten to add ;)).

It'd be very a boring place if we all liked the same things...

D70 28 April 2005 01:36 PM

True but the train spotters are still spods though.

...........and the fart in a lift people are perverts.

Leslie 28 April 2005 02:42 PM

I have to be honest and say that it raises a smile D70.

but not the farts!

Les :D
