Rear propshaft oil seal leak?

Looking at the underneath of my car (MY01 Bugeye) approx. where the rear of the propshaft seems to meet the rear diff there is what appears to be a thickish oil or grease plastered all around the surrounding bracket.
Is there an oil seal in this area that may have gone or what else might it be.

If it is an oil seal how big a job is it to rectify?

If the description is not clear I will try and post up some pics.

Thanks

Mark.

There is a seal where the prop enters the box yes...

not 100% sure on size of the job, not sure if the box needs to be removed and split to fit the seal, I would suspect not and just a case of draining box oil, dropping prop and replacing the seal.. but only removed the prop and box to change a clutch so did no more than look at the seal when putting the prop back in, but not with changing it in ,mind.

Simon, are you describing the front end of the propshaft? (gearbox end).

From memory, which often fails me, it's where the rear of the propshaft marries up with a shaft from the rear diff?.

Apologies if you were talking about the rear diff end.

oh bollox.. sorry yes I was talking about the gearbox end..

sounds like you have a faulty rear diff then..

There is a seal in the rear diff where the prop/diff flange is.

The prop itself has no oil seal as it is a dry prop.

Rob knows more than I do about it.. I have only ever just unbolted the prop from the diff..

Rob

Is it a big job to change the seal or could an amateur DIY'er (me) :) do it?

Would you expect to see some oil/grease around prop/diff flange area anyway?

Mark.
