Advice on Fixing Binding Disk Brake
 

Help!
The off-side rear disk brake is binding on my runabout! Heat build up and squeaking symptoms suggest this!
Can anyone suggest where best to take the car to have the calliper released, greased up and generally sorted, without experiencing the (sucking of teeth) “you'll need to replace the calliper, disks and pads to fix it sir” type of “service”?
Places like ATS, Quick Fit and Hi-Q advertise brake service. Anyone have any experience of these places for such a problem?

It is an easy one to sort out yourself that mate if you can undo a few bolts!

Definitely - propose to jack it up tonight to have a fiddle anyways.
Issue/concerns is what is specific to the car (location of bleed valves etc) and what specific tools I may need.
Any generic hints most welcome (unless you are an expert on Nissan Sunny's LOL!).
Obvious questions are:
1. How do I work out if it's the handbrake or footbrake that is the problem?
2. How do I release the pads from the disks in the 1st place?
3. What am I looking for to grease up to aide movement?
4. Do I need to bleed individual brake and can I do it without messing up the whole system?

It probably wont need bleeding or be the handbrake binding. Chances are it will be a sliding caliper where the bolts have rusted in place.
Look for 2 bolts surrounded by rubber gaitors, remove them, clean and regrease. Check that caliper slides in and out, replace pads. Easy.

Can you clarify one bit – am I likely to need to remove pads to get at the bolts?
Also, sliding callipers are what name suggests – compress and release the pads from the disks?
Will give it a go tonight - hope it's as easy as you make it sound! :)

You may be able to unbolt the caliper from the hub without releasing the handbrake mechanism (cable), if so the caliper could slide off the disc complete with pads, you could remove the pads then. Refit the caliper and see if it moves in and out, if not clean and regrease the bolts until it slides. Refit pads.
It is easy really.

Have to admit that the 2 bolts you mention don’t jump out at me – is this the Scoob setup or a generic arrangement for callipers in general?
My callipers should unbolt from hub by undoing 2 nuts. Unfortunately, only managed to get one nut undone over the weekend as could not get decent grip on the 2nd.
Calliper unit appears to be a one-piece thing with the handbrake “hook” part and the pipe for the footbrake going into it. Looking at it in place, the piston that pushes the pads onto the disk has not retracted as on the other side of the car, hence why pads are sticking.
Don’t know if a) I can get nut undone to get calliper off (only have a single jack and so can’t rock the car too much) and b) whether if I grease up the piston whether this will make it move better and get the required retraction of the pads to clear the disk :confused:
Have to get it fixed DIY, as Nissan OEM parts are horrendously expensive! :eek:
