advice on engine mods

The car is a MY96 WRX, totally standard apart from the backbox. I'm planning on putting a decat downpipe in, but I'm a bit concerned about doing damage to the engine, ie overboost, lean fuel, knocking etc etc etc. What is the best method of monitoring/controlling the engine running, I thought about
the following,

Boost Gauge for monitoring boost
Manual Boost Controller to adjust boost
Lambda Link for lean mixture
AFR for adjusting the lean mixture
Knocklink for detecting knock

Possibly upgrading TMIC

Car has 85K miles and running on optimax with no octane booster.

Is this a bit OTT or is there a better way to do it, possibly a remap ?

Cheers.

My 96 wrx with runs fine with a full decat. When i say runs fine i mean i have almost no knocklink activity and the afr gauge shows a rich mixture on WOT all the way upto and past 100+mph. I am still running the standard boost and have not had to install and boost controler or the like.
I think you should try without the MBC first. You will prob find the boost will overshoot a little but not enough to hit the fuel cut and all will be fine.

Good luck.

That sounds great, so there should be no problems, just change the pipe and go !!!! I just need to get a knocklink and afr to keep a check on things.

Thanks for the info mate, I can't wait to hear the noise with the decat, it sounds great at the moment.

Have you got any other plans for yours wrx ? I thought about the IC, but not sure, changing to a later date one seems tricky and a brand new one to replace the slanty one is expensive.

By the way what fuel do you run yours on ?? Optimax, octane boost

Cheers,
Neil

No plans at the mo. Ive spent too much already.
I have a wrx wagon with the following mods
Full rebuild by Api
td05
z4 ecu
full scoobysport decat system with jap style slash cut tail pipe
organic clutch
lightened flywheel
knocklink
dawes afr

Expect pops bangs and flames if you go for a full decat:)
Sounds fkin mint

I run on nothing but optimax - no Ob - i get very little det - only the odd green

I know what you mean though. I heard reports of overboosting on here when decats are fitted but mine is running perfect with the scoobysport one

The scoobysport decat was the one I'm going for too, can't wait for the pops and bangs !!!!! Is yours a full 3" system, I currently have the standard 2.5" centre section, so I would need the 3" to 2.5" decat, maybe I should change the whole system ???

Cheers
