Mounting EGT probe

Should the EGT probe be mounted before or after the turbo
Im just a little confused  as the megan headers i am fitting have a EGT fitting about 2 inches from turbo inlet, and the instructions with the gauge say to fit it about 2 inches from the turbo exhaust outlet
Thanks
Gary

Ideally, you want an EGT from as close to one of the exhaust ports as is posible, so you should mount it in the headers. :)

If you mount it in the downpipe, much of the heat will have been dissipated through the manifold and the turbo, so the reading you would get on the gauge won't be very useful IMO :)

If it is a decatted system the EGT is worth moving to the downpipe where it will run cooler. Otherwise you'll be replacing these regularly....I melted 5 before I learnt.
However there are some companies that offer an egt fix, so you can leave it where it is & not worry.....

You can get up-pipes with an Egt sensor hole......

These are the headers i have http://tinypic.com/4j9ueq
There is a boss at the top by the turbo mounting flange, and another at the bottom by the collector
Which is the best one to use

Hi Gary, I would use the one at the flange nearest the turbo as this seems to be the desired place most put their sensors and there is less risk of it getting torched to death :D (up-pipe)

Cheers

Now I'm also getting confused?

Have also bourght a set of headers (GT Spec) with simular holes as the one Gary has. I have always been under the impression that I should use the hole in the up-pipe. Is that wrong?

Gary,
You're going to have to tell us more about your car type, what other exhaust mods you have done and whether you are using original or aftermarket EGT/lambda sensors first before any meaningful advice can be given.
eg IF you have a newage car and IF you are going to use the std sensors, then the Lambda sensor has to go in the collector and the EGT sensor will have to go in the up-pipe (unless you do a cel fix) as there is no hole in the std downpipe.

Nick
