UK MY 97 + TD05
Can I just replace the TD04 with a TD05, will the ECU adjust accordingly or will I have to fit a mappable ECU? Car is UK 97 turbo. Also, how do I convert it to front entry had a search but couldn't find anything.
Thanks Luke |
I replaced my TD04 with a VF 28 with no remap etc, themaf and lambda sensor will adjust the AFR for more air flow, mine runs great and dyno tested on AFR all was sweet, others will tell you different though.
20,000 miles later on std map, injectors and no knocklink etc AP |
what year is yours? mine is a 97 which has a sh*t ECU apparently

madness pure madness

I have a UK97 as well mate. Initially went bolt on mods route and achieved 296 bhp (TD05FE plus decat amongst other bits) There were NO issues with running this set up for 3/ 4 months so understand where "AP" is coming from.
As an aside Rich Wild (Jap Innovations) ran his UK97 with standard injectors and no remap for some time before adding a suitable ECU and his car ran in excess of 380 bhp. Spent £700.00 on an Apexi ECU and must say this is the best mod I have added to the car (mapped by AndyF) Bhp up to 318 but its the torque that was gained that made it worth the outlay. Send me a PM if you are looking for any help. I'm certainly no mechanic but can at least give you some idea of spec (and more importantly costs that I have had to shell out) to get it to whats considered to be a mild state of tune in comparison to what some have managed to achieve on here. Jap Innovations (free plug) gave me my advice and I've been very happy with the results and their work :notworthy: Good luck |

AS for the original topic of td04 to td05 the original injectors and map will *easily* cope with that swap with no remap. Get a life knob cheese :cuckoo: |

cheers all how much difference does the front entry make?

I can see both sides AP. I know one end of the car from the other and thats about it so I relied heavily on advice from others. There were so many horror stories I was initially put off doing basic modifications but after speaking to the guys at Jap Innovations (and especially after seeing Rich Wilds car for myself) I realised a lot of these were exactly that.......stories.
Like I say I ran a new turbo and higher boost alongside other mods on the standard turbo and injectors and saw NO knocklink activity at all. The irony is I see more now that the car is mapped!!! Having the car mapped was certainly worthwhile not just for a piece of mind but the whole drive was transformed and its this that I'm happy with the most. I certainly subscribe to your views AP. However I can appreciate Rich's arguement about airing on the side of caution. Can often go over the top though with some (this is not aimed at you Rich) |

As RLE has said (cheers for the mention ;)) you can quite happily run a 97UK with TD05 on the standard ECU to quite respectable levels of power PROVIDING it isn't done blindly ie knocklink, AFR and or EGT gauge etc are strongly recommended.
You will have a car that is much quicker than the with the 04 albeit a lot more laggy. To obtain the maximum benefit in terms of flexibility, then a remap is strongly advised but it is by no means absolutely essential provided you have your wits about you and are monitoring what you should be. But as with any modding you've got to be prepared to take the consequences of getting it wrong. I always had in the back of my head that there was the possibility i'd blow it up. My car with the OEM ECU made between 370 and 386bhp on numerous occasions but it didn't have half the midrange flexibility it now has since the Andy F remap with an Apexi. Peak power is still about the same as it was but the area under the curve is drastically more. People used to think the world was flat. Unless people get off their arse and try to prove otherwise we'll all remain in the dark. There are lots of people on this BBS, Andy F, Harvey, Dave Wallis, Bob Rawle etc who've gone out and tried new things despite conventional wisdom to the contrary. That's why we are now seeing cars developing power that 5 years ago was mythical. |
