A person, not excused from jury service, commits an offence if he either fails to attend on a day covered by the summons, or, having attended, is then either not available when called on to serve or is unfit by reason of drink or drugs. This offence is punishable either on summary conviction (i.e. before a magistrate), or as if it were a criminal contempt committed in the face of the court. This means that the Crown Court judge may, and normally would, determine whether an offence has been committed, rather than causing a summary prosecution to be brought. The offence is punishable with a fine of up to £1,000. |
You can defer it with good reason but you still have to do it later on. You can only defer once.

OK, I know about having it deferred. Fortunately the court service are customers of the company I'm with, but unfortunately we forgot to tell them to "defer" my jury service again. I just happened to say to the MD earlier to remind him to make sure and do something, he later came back to me and told me I was supposed to be there at 10am this morning! They sorted me out before, but I guess moving address triggered my name on some system somewhere. Shaun |

If you believe that you will not be able to serve on the date summoned, you must clearly state your reasons in full on the reply to your Jury Summons. You must also state what other days during the next 12 months that you will not be able to attend so that the Jury Central Summoning Bureau can rearrange your jury service to a more convenient date should they grant your application. Deferral can, by law, only be granted once, so you must make sure you include all dates to avoid. |
