megan racing headers

Hello about to but some megan racing headers with up pipe . just wondering if they are any good and what to expect when fitting them? Also are they equal length or unequel ? They are on flat4online.co.uk

cheers jamie

Mine have been on the car 3 months now and can report on having no problems with them they are unequal lenght easy to fit and you dont lose the flat four rummble.

good stuff cheers mate. Im getting pissed off with all the manifold gaskets that keep blowing every time i give the car a good drive . So did it make a noticable diffferance after you fitted it?

gussy 02 April 2005 05:25 PM

Yes it seemed to be quicker but it wasn't until Andy.f remapped the car that I got the full benefit of it plus the other mods.I had tried gruppe s headers before the megans and I had all sorts of problems with leaking gaskets/bad flanges the megans where a straight fit and forget item, no leaks whatsoever.

banny sti 02 April 2005 05:32 PM

hi gussy did you wrap the headers before fitting them?

gussy 02 April 2005 08:00 PM

Yes I did .

banny sti 02 April 2005 08:41 PM

how much did it cost to wrap? i have the same headers and want to wrap them but dont know how much it will cost. :)

gussy 03 April 2005 09:58 AM

It cost me about £50 I got some heat wrap off a mate and I had a little spare heat wrap already lying in the garage as well. It takes 2 rolls of the stuff to do the job right Im sure someone on here will know a good supplier and can advise you on where to get it from.

Madden 03 April 2005 06:44 PM

what happens if you dont wrap them. Is there more heat soak of the headers compared to the standard one?

Jay m A 05 April 2005 09:24 AM

If you don't wrap them then yes, underbonnet temp do increase, but the main advantage with wrapping them is that the exhaust gasses stay hotter, flow faster and increases spool.

I wrapped my Megan headers last night, used 30m of 50mm wrap from http://www.thinkauto.com/ (see online shop) I had about 5m left over, I also used their stainless steel ties (20 off). Came to £70 delivered.

Don't forget to wrap them wet, then spray them with heat paint once dry.

By the way its a bitch of a job, took 4 hours, a lot of swearing and I'm still covered in firbreglass lol

Madden 05 April 2005 04:19 PM

What paint did you use mate? And does itr smell and burn at high temps?

69WRX 05 April 2005 04:43 PM

I used a spray paint from a local motor factors. The make was sperex VHT, cost about £6. Available in black or silver.
Smelt the first couple of times i used the car but is fine now and paint seems to be holding up.
heres a pic of headers wrapped & painted.

looks good boys will have to do it then.. Does the headers make a differance in the spool up time and torque figures?

Jamie

You will see a gain in torque and BHP, but probably lose spool up (increase lag) compared with OE headers. A remap is needed to get the real benefit, basically the OE headers are really good regarding spool, but as the mods go on and power rises, the OE headers need attention, either porting or replacing.

I got the Megans because they are cheap, have good reports with the TD05 and I'm aiming for 350 BHP for now, 400+ when funds allow - makes sense for me. Probably not a good idea if you have a TD04, might as well port the OE ones and keep the excellent spool characteristics.

IMO

i thought my 96 sti 2 was laggy already dont want anymore . im using the standard td05 turbo .
