What is this sensor????

Hello, i have a 95 JDM sti-ra. I am changing the standard down pipe for a non-cat version and have been offered a new H+S item with the lambda sensor and blanking plug in the end next to the turbo. I have checked my std version and there is not a sensor fitted there (no problem just fit the blank) but i have noticed a small sensor further down the pipe about 18" from the where it connects with the centre pipe. It is only small and is not a lambda type but has a steel overbraid to protect the wiring running back to where it has a connector into the loom by the airbox.
What is it? what does it do ? can i run withit disconnected and do i need to get a downpipe with a threaded boss fitted in this posistion? :iamwithst

It is a cat on fire sensor , unplug it and forget it

As big bear says, it is a "cat on fire" sensor. unplug it and forget about it!

Didn't realise STi's had centre cats - my 5 Type R certainly didn't (and as such had no "cat on fire sensors)

That sensor is the exhaust gas temp unit.

So, do i need to cut the boss out of my std down pipe and fit it to my new one and run the sensor as the exhaust shouldnt be as hot with both cat's removed??????

You don't need it unplug it and forget it , I have an STi 2 and had the same sensor in the down pipe , I disconnected mine and it has never had an adverse effect
