Mate just lost his 6 year old lad

Got run over outside school .......... How the hell would you cope with that? Makes everything pale into insignificance.

Gary

SirFozzalot 16 March 2005 11:27 AM

 My heart goes out to the family :(

Not sure how I would deal with something like that if it happened to me!

Brendan Hughes 16 March 2005 11:35 AM

Was he a happy kid?

Don't have a child of my own, only my wife's, but I was discussing how much to protect children with a colleague over lunch yesterday. His 8-yr-old had been to a party, totally unsupervised, and one kid went home with a swollen finger after the others dropped a paving slab on it (they were trying to get something underneath). He was horrified that no parents were present, and how much he tries to protect them. I said I've given mine a fairly free rein - at 11 I got him on a cycling proficiency course then told him to cycle to the swimming baths 2.5 miles away down the A-road. When I was 10 I held a bit of rope which my 12-yr-old brother tried to chainsaw - I still have the scar (on my thumb). There are so, so many times when things could have turned out worse.

Sorry to hear the news, but I hope he had a good and happy life.

m18use 16 March 2005 11:41 AM

Words cannot describe the pain his parents must be going through.
Deepest sympathy.

Regacy 16 March 2005 11:48 AM

Just thinking about this makes me feel sick.
As a parent I can think of nothing worse to deal with than this.
Makes you realise how fragile our happy lives are.

Paulo P 16 March 2005 11:53 AM

That's awful :( Sorry to hear that. Can't even think what that must be like :(

ScoobyJawa 16 March 2005 11:57 AM

Not a nice thing to happen and i'm amazed how well the dad is holding up. Fair play to the bloke, I would be in bits.

Just goes to show you. you have to live for today as you never know whats round the corner.

Gary

GaryK 16 March 2005 12:11 PM

Yep sad sad news Gary indeed. :(

T4molie 16 March 2005 12:13 PM

STi wanna Subaru 16 March 2005 12:19 PM

Talk about your life being ripped apart.... :(

Bravo2zero_sps 16 March 2005 01:10 PM

Another tragic waste of life :(

As for him holding up quite well this is quite possibly due to the shock of such news/being strong for his wife, once its sunk in (possibly over a period of a few days) he may not deal with it quite as well as he is now :(

:(

scoobydooooo 16 March 2005 01:25 PM

my sympathies to your mate, gutted is not the word

Echo 16 March 2005 01:25 PM

Absolutely tragic.

alcazar 16 March 2005 01:29 PM

OMG, that's awful. When I read the title, I took a deep breath before clicking on the link, hoping it was going to be something like "6 year old clean license".

On opening the link, my heart sank. What can anyone say? It's every parent's worst nightmare. No-one expects or wants to outlive their children:(

Absolutely gutted for your mate, and will be thinking of the family, even though I don't know them.

Alcazar

Terrible, and one of the reasons that I'd be perfectly happy to have a 20mph limit and cameras outside every school. Oh, and 4wds taken off the road.

What were the circumstances? Not that it matters, I guess, but was it an idiot driver or just a tragic and virtually unavoidable accident?

wiltshire_boy 16 March 2005 01:44 PM

Can't imagine what they are feeling, his family has our deepest sympathy.

Roy.

Very true.

Absolutely horrible news. :(

type-r-stan 16 March 2005 02:53 PM

An awul thing for any family to go through - their lives are forever changed.

As a mate the only thing you can do is be there. cliche i know but very true.

My 12 yr old cousin was killed on the 1st day of the kids' summer holidays ten years ago and his loss is felt every day. My aunt talks about him every day in some way even if its a very brief reference whereas my uncle has spoken of him once in 10 years but is often up at 3 in the morning polishing all Jamie's photographs. They deal with it in such different ways but have mananged to stay together. i remember my aunt saying that one of the hardest things was that some people avoided her because they didn't know what to say once the funeral had taken place and life was getting back to 'normal'. She still has bad days but they are less and less as the years go by (birthdays and anniversary of death), she has 2 other kids as well who are now 25 and 21 who have both had to cope and have done so remarkably well.

My thoughts are truly with that family.

Dazza's-STi 16 March 2005 03:00 PM

Oh thats so sad... my heart felt simpathy, nothing we can say on here will do anything for them but its a way of expressing our simpathy...

I really feel for them, i couldn't even imagine what that feels like...

Terrible news and my heart goes out to all the family and certainly puts life back into perspective.

Agree with the 20 mph outside schools or road calming measures but have disagree strongly with the 4wd comment.

Lee247 16 March 2005 04:04 PM

My deepest sympathy to the family, its absolutely heart breaking.

carlos30 16 March 2005 04:11 PM

Alcazar

My thoughts exactly.
I have 4 kids and can't start to think how I would feel or cope.

My deepest sympathy goes to your friend. :(

Stevie.p 16 March 2005 04:22 PM

That's terrible my heart goes out to the family

My best mate and his father were returning home from work one evening the road condition's weather and road were fine but Mr man in his white van decided to overtake on the crest of a hill onto a cheveroned area in the road not being able to see what is at the bottom.

My mate and his father were at the bottom the driver of the van went head on collision van verse's car killed my mate and his father out right but the driver of the van came out with very minor cut's and bruses.

This is 3 1/2 years ago now but like type-r-stan said there is never a day goes past when think about them :( :(

Not meaning to preach, but a Discovery weighing 2.7 tonnes is likely to cause more damage than a 1.5 tonne car. Allied to that, the shape (usually very square) and the height mean that they are remarkably pedestrian-unfriendly. Oh, and they use loads more fuel, handle far worse than a standard car, and fool inexperienced drivers into a false sense of security.

That having been said, I don't want to drag this off topic - I don't know what happened in this instance, but having seen a Landcruiser Mum very nearly clip my 4 year-old (who can barely be seen over the bonnet of this quasi-truck), you'll perhaps understand where I'm coming from.
