Not sure if there is a performance difference but the sport has the turbo/wrx skirts bumper and spoiler, better interior, alloys. oh and i think it has short ratio gearbox too.

http://www.imprezasport.net is a good resource for NA scoob info

I had a '99 Sport as a company car and was told that it is the same engine and suspension as a GL. It does have the 'nice' trim, i.e. 15" alloys, wrx bumpers, side skirts, rear spoiler etc, etc. Inside it had better seats than the GL, but not as good as the WRX seats of the same era. All in all, not a bad car, underpowered as the chassis could handle quite a lot more power, but felt very 'safe' on the road.

The main differences are the styling (Front bumper/skirts/spoilers)

Plus 15" alloys

The biggest difference is the ABS

Sport has ABS
GL has NO ABS
