TRACK DAY TYRES ANYONE??
 

I am thinking of taking my Scooby to track days and have aquired some 17'' Alloys for the track. I need two new tyres and have seen two partly used Bridgestone Potenzas for sale cheap on ebay

Am i better off using these or should i get four new slicks???????????
Is the difference of using slicks noticable enough to go through the trouble of changing the wheels when i get to the track?

I think you will notice slicks.....

....by about 5 secs per lap!

Slicks make a big big difference - that's not to say you should use them though!

look at demon tweeks ect, or.

find your local toyo supplier, find the one that is the main stockist in your area, ie ring around for normal tyre prices on t1 wrs. Mine was kingsway tyres bu this varies from area to area.

go in and butter them up and ask for them to get prices on the toyo motorsport tyres R888 (sort of road legal cut slicks). you may be suprised how cheap they can get them for.

or find someone in a tyre sponsorerd championship and ask them to get you some. Dunlop sponsered the btrda super 1600 a few years back i managed to get a full set of sp sports for £200.

It depends what you want to do on the track day. If you must be the fastest there, get some slicks. If you want to learn about the handling of your car in a safe environment, use road tyres. I'm in a smilar boat to you. I'll be taking my Type R out on track for the first time next weekend. I've a fair bit of track experience with other cars( Puma, Impreza WRX MY01, Octavia vRS) but have opted to use road tyres to learn more about the DCCD on the car.

I may get some slicks later in the year though :D

You'll find a tyre truck at most trackdays who will have part worn slicks for sale. Mine cost about £35 a corner, fitted and balanced. They last about 4 or 5 trackdays. A lot cheaper than ruining your road tyres and better grip too.

slicks tend to raise the limit even further beyond the drivers ability.

when cold they are best described as 'lethal' unless you are used to them.

once warm they will put considerable strain on the drivetrain and virtually every other mechanical component as you will be pushing harder.

most trackday insurance policies will not cover you to run on slicks.

having said all that I run slicks in the dry and wets, surprisingly, in the wet. it costs me a fortune both in tyres and in wheel bearings, and can be a real PITA in changeable conditions.

hence if I'm in a road car I usually run road tyres, and the slick / inter / wet combinatios only on race cars.

As RRH says I'd recommend starting with worn road tyres for track days. With slicks the increase in grip is impressive, but when they are cold or the track is damp then it's a nightmare.
I sprint my impreza and when my friend & I race the person who goes second has a massive advantage, because it takes 2-3 laps to get reasonable heat into them.

The other disadvantage is having to change the wheels & tyres when you get to an event.By the time I've preapred the car I need to lie down for 20 mins, not great when you're about to go racing. In future I will trailer the car if I'm using slicks.

Worn tyres are easy to find and slicks are available from e-bay or in the Motoring News
